I just placed an order for SafeTCaps for my 02 PreRunner double-cab 2WD and I'd like to take care of everything in the back at the same time regarding suspension/bushings, etc. I'm probably going to order a rear tank cross-member from Toyota to save time trying to rebuild the original that is really thin.
Looking for input on a stock type shock for the rear. Trying to save a little in the aftermarket space (RockAuto or ??) so what will give a decent ride, mainly street use. Monroe, Gabriel, ect? At this point I'm not interested in pushing any performance envelope, just want a good riding vehicle for my son to drive.
What about spring bushings, they're looking a little tired. I think the springs are OK for now, ride height looks right.
    Anything else I'm missing?
Should I mess with the fuel pump while the tank is out?
I'm replacing all the brake lines and getting a new rear proportional valve from Toyota. Holy cow, this stuff adds up quick!

Bilstein 4600's for stock height, 5100s if you lift it 1-3"

But if you're going through all that trouble, just replace all the things.

General springs are a good OEM alternative. IIRC they come with bushings, but if not either whiteline or energy suspension.

i second this. I would definitely try to replace anything now since you have all that off. Will save you the time and potentially money. I know some will say dont fix it if its not broken but if you have the funds i would do it now. After all the car is 20+ years old. At some point some other those things will give out. Good luck

You’re going to want new ubolts, main eye bolts and shackles, the General Springs and shackles I bought came with bushings

If you can you can try and burn out the old bushings and reuse the leaf pack

If it’s like mine the shackles and main eyebolt will be torched

Thanks for the reply's. I'm getting the sense that the Bilstein shocks are the way to go.
I appreciate the links to your work Roboturner. The parts list and sources is very helpful. Not sure what I'm going to do with the springs at this point, but they may go for new ones.

I've got some pics as I have progressed. I will start a separate thread with the restoration work. This started out as just repairing a rusted/leaking brake line and has increased in scope dramatically. I've got both rear cross-members out and probably will be buying a new one for the rear tank position and repairing the one at the back. I'm in process of cutting out all the gusset pockets on the back of the frame. Seems that every one of these held moisture and are the source of the bad corrosion. Once the frame is treated, and SafeTCap'd I will weld in new gussets that have a chance of draining before I paint/seal it.

Big job, good luck! I would highly rec throwing some new leaf springs on, the springs and 4600s made a world of difference in the quality of the ride. also GO Pack!

So I got a set of Bilstein 4600 rear shocks shipped in, was a trick finding one of them, but that is done.

    OEM or Poly bushings?
The springs are out. The rear shackles didn't fight and are in good shape and should be able to be reused but I might just replace them. The front eye bolts were rusted into the bushing and I had to cut the bolt on both sides of the bushing to get it out. I think the spring is not sagging and is usable for a while so I want to replace the bushings. Any reason NOT to use poly from a ride or noise perspective? A full poly kit by Energy Suspension is less expensive than piecing together the OEM style bushings on the couple sites I was looking.

Bump Stop? Standard bump stop the way to go? $18 a side from the dealer isn't too bad and we won't be doing much/any offroading with it in the forseeable future.
