    Hello Everyone,

my friend is selling me a 2001 tacoma with 83k miles (base) for about 5k. The only thing it needs is a new front bumper (small dent) and the AC needs to be fixed. Is that a good deal? It also has a Leer camper shell i didn't want.. how much could i sale that for? Overall the car is in pretty good shape

    Photo attached.

It depends on the market where you live

I live in California. Here I would snatch that up in a heart beat, polish it, and relist it at $10k, and it would sell fast. Although the market is calming down a bit

I am in Socal.. my friend has been the owner since new, i would be the 2nd owner.. it really only needs a new front bumper. The body is in great shape. Is it hard to remove the camper shell?

as they are your friend you kind of have an inside track on the maintenance, that's premium information right there.

also consider you may have to replace worn out components too, 21 years is still a long time for rubber bushings, balljoints , leaf springs

cap is easy to remove, a couple of clamps and a friend it's off in 5 minutes

as for price, I think that's fair, especially to us rust belt people :)

It's a 5 lug 2wd. Limits your market a lot, but there are buyers out there.

I'd get an evaluation on fixing the AC before buying. If the compressor is toast, the total repair can be $1500-$2000, making it a pretty expensive truck.

OP, where are you located? I might take that shell off your hands if you don’t want it.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
As long as your happy that is all that matters!

A Tacoma that old is going to have neglected areas of Maintenance . Good to share what engine?

I would not even worry about a dent in the bumper.

Look to having the AC fixed that can get real expensive it would be good to know when it last worked..

    good luck

Nice that's a good deal. That being said, what would you want to do with this truck? It would make a nice city/work truck but there aren't a lot of offroad options since it is a 5 lug. The camper is pretty easy to remove, usually a few c clamps to unbolt, then lift off with a couple dudes. Also the bumper is easy to swap out yourself and there are a fair amount of aftermarket vendors that sell the front bumper

Isn't that a 2.4L I4? Keep up on the maintenance and it should be a decent buy.

This is a great deal on a very low mile 5 lug (as long as the frame is good). In California with a full detail, new bumpers you could flip it for $9-10K. These 5 lugs can go 300K miles easy if you take care of them (just look at the high miles ones on CL as proof). As other have have mentioned you can sell the shell for $500-1000. I have the same with only 93K miles. People offer to buy it all the time.

I’d say that’s a very good deal. I wouldn’t hesitate one bit if it was me!

I’d buy it in a heartbeat.

Heck I’d write a check right now for it, sight unseen.

AC repairs can cost a lot, depending on the fix. No ABS until the 2003 models. If you’re not gonna do a DIY bumper change, a shop will charge considerably. All these things considered and your not wanting or unable to do them yourself beforehand , I’d start at $7,500 and go from there.
