Do you have an automotive stethoscope? I'd pick one up, and see if you pin the down the tick. My guess is that the injectors need to be serviced or replaced, or you have an exhaust leak. Check out the Motorwest Performance Denso "Upgrade" injectors. I had an exhaust leak on one of the manifold to crossover pipe flanges. Ended up replacing as many of the gaskets as possible even though only one was leaking. 20+ year old parts and all. I was able to see exhaust escaping on a cold startup. Since it was before the sensors I wasn't getting catalyst codes.

There is a small valve on top of the charcoal cannister that will sometimes click repeatedly. It can sound like a tapping valve. Use a stethoscope and point it around till you find the sound. If it's the valve on the charcoal cannister, just ignore it.

Just to add to the above, did the 2001 Tacomas have the charcoal canister under the hood or under the truck bed? I can't remember.

Regardless the vacuum purge valve is know to make that annoying clicking sound. It's normally on the driver's side of the engine compartment.

Did you check the oil level?

Good call on the purge valve.

Yes, 2001 had the canister in the engine compartment.
