Ive read you need a 30ton press to change these bearings...is that correct? I tried a search on this forum but didnt come up with anything specific.

Also how difficult is it to replace the cv joints?

No idea about the bearings/press...but as for the cv's are you asking the axle? Replacing is fairly simple

    Yup that's the cv axle..
    Remove tire/wheel
    Remove dust cap
Remove axle nut 35mm socket I use a cordless dewalt
    Remove LBJ bolts
Remove or loosen sway bar (if you still have one)
Pry bar on the lip of the axle close to where it enters the ifs and pull it out

Usually if your gonna replace the wheel bearings I would take off the hub and take it to a shop and have them remove and replace the new bearings

If your cv axles on there now are the originals....don't trade them to oreillys, napa, etc.... For the ones they sell.....I highly recommend ordering new axles thru cvj axles and sending them yours as cores....but that's only if yours are the oem axles

Most dealers will replace the bearings no problem if you bring the knuckle to them. They do prefer to use their own parts with their own mark up.

the Bearing, its bigger than ya think

    IMG_5122.jpg

had to fab a press block to push against, used a HF 20ton press.
box is 4x6" 1/4" wall, made end caps to fit in ends of block to help it not collapse, used a pair of draw bolts from a HF spring compressor to keep blocks together when pushing
    IMG_5125.jpg

first push got this far, had to reset and use some 1" bar stock to push against to get flange rest of way out.
    IMG_5126.jpg

    Back side after first push
    IMG_5127.jpg

I quit taking pictures at this point, it was 100° out, hotter in my shop, i was tired, pissy and exhausted.
i also swapped front diff out in the process (gearing problem) of doing bearings.

it aint for the faint hearted,

bearing itself is held into spindle with large snap ring, you'll have to push bearing back into spindle to release snap ring, then push bearing out back to front.

No iirc there is a nut on the back side of the hub might only be pre runners like that I know my brothers 4runner had a big nut there took a special tool to put it on w used an air hammer to spin it off

only PreRunners and 2wd 4Runners and trucks with manual locking hubs

ADD 4wds use the CV shaft to hold bearing together, the nut for that can be reused as it's not staked

FYI, i bought "NATIONAL" brand bearings, they were KOYO in the box, and cheaper than a KOYO online (though i do get discounts a certain parts houses too)

don't cheap out on the parts, this is one job that you really only want to do once...

I got my bearings in the mail yesterday and wondered why the bearing inner race was so big...then I looked at your pics again...its the hub that goes back into the bearing.
