Simply put 1-2" is best. But goals and budget play a huge roll into the how and why.

Depends on what you want to do. Regardless. Keep it under 3”. You can start with Bilstein 5100 or 6112’s. 1 - 1.5 inch block in the rear if on a budget.

I hear a lot about the bilsteins…i hear people do 6112 in front 5100 in back…I wouldn’t go more than 3”…. Idk what’s a decent budget for this wouldn’t want to go to crazy maybe 2k or is that unrealistic? I would need tires too

$200 x 4 tires. Mounting, bal, tax, alignment. You are over $1000.

And we're saying 3" is alot. You end up losing alot of ride quality increased maintenance on cv axles lots of potential till for vibrations.

I had my truck at 3" at first to help compensate for spring sag and the extra weight of my bumper and winch so it would ideally rest at around 2" all said and done. And I personally would never want to run that much lift again.

There's other aspects to the lift to consider aswell. Potential for front diff vibrations caused by the clamshell needle bearing or angled spacers/carrier bearing spacers to get that rear drive shaft inclined to reduce vibrations. Going to a 6112 you may have to do uca's to clear the 2.5" shock body.

Then there's mention of tires, staying stock size? 32" 33" 35" ? These goals all play into what direction is best do you want to push the offset of the wheel for a wide look aswell.

So for the best advice from all. I would outline use (street queen, weekend warrior, light wheeler etc...) tire size goal then lastly budget.

I think a link to tinkerers videos may have been posted already if not look up yinkerers adventures on YouTube and watch his videos on Toyota ifs for a better understanding on what your going to affect with a lift.

Keep it stock, because stock is cool.
If you really want to lift your truck, do lots of research and do more research.
When you have the funds for the lift you want, pull the trigger.
    Good luck with your truck.

yea I have some more research to do I’m not that well versed about all the other things that can be affected… I’m going for more the look but definitely want to do some off roading… maybe 33” tires that a popular tire with the tacomas I see.. the main thing is I want no custom fab work, cutting, or trimming. So I’d rather add a lift to get the aggressive tire look. I hear lots of negative things about spacers that seems like the cheap route I don’t want worse to happen from taking a cheap route

So I'll give you some food for thought that might really simplify things.

33" can be looked at a few different ways.
    255/80r17 tall skinny
Virtually no modifications to fit on stock may have to remove chin spoiler and mudflaps.
285/70r17 the not quite 33 but most common size
Generally ran with a 1-2" lift adjustable uca and custom alignment required to clear without a cmc pending wheel offset minor plastic trimming will be required at a minimum
33x12.5 not common amongst tacoma owners from what I see
Just get ready to start cutting
265/70r17 32" honestly best size for these trucks
Best availability in non LT rated tires best balance of MPG to performance. Generally no rubbing besides mud flap pending wheel offset.

With all the changes I have made I miss my truck on a 0 offset wheel and a 265/70r17. It had a good stance reasonably agressive look still went everywhere I needed it to and required the least work. If I still drove my truck day to day I would revert back to that set up.
Wheels tires and skids is where I would start over a lift.
    20210522_151450.jpg
    17x9 +1 265/70r17 duratrac stock suspension
    20230709_164223.jpg
Current set up next to a stock offroad with 265/75r16 tires
I'm on 2ish" lift front and rear 295/70r17

And that thing has followed 90% of the places I have gone.

Here's some things to keep in mind. Adding a lift is somewhat of a slippery slope, but well worth it in my opinion as I never leave my vehicles stock (Thats just me).
Whatever you do, DON'T cheap out on this because when it comes to lifts, you do get what you pay for most of the time.
    • If you are going to keep your stock wheels expect to pay about $1300 - $1500 on a 285/75/16 or 285/70/17 tire for set of 4 (mount, balanced, alignment)
    • If you want custom wheels add about another $800 - $1400 based on your preference of wheel.
    • Most folks go for Bilsteins for an entry level but decent lift (And yes you heard correct, NEVER go Spacers despite what anyone says. Staying stock would be better)
    • If you want to stay with the Stock tire size then going with a 1 or 2" lift would be fine although may not have the aggressiveness you are looking for
    • There are many lift options out there (Dobinson, Dirt King, Bilstein, Toytec, King, Icon, Fox, etc). Personally I went with an ICON stage 9 which comes with the rear leaf pack (I needed that due to the weight of a Cap, and Decked drawer system). Of course you may want to consider a leaf pack with your lift since the stock leafs are total garbage and will flatten out if they havent already. ICON has a lot of good offerings in different stages. The stage 9 is overkill for most people but I love it and the ride is far better than stock I can tell you that for sure.
    • You will want to get an ECGS needle bearing eliminator bushing because your needle bearing will start grinding almost immediately (no big deal though to replace especially if it is done during the lift install)
    • All that said you can expect to pay anywhere from $2000 - $7000 for a decent lift and having someone install it for you (not including the tires mentioned above).
