Service Manual calls for 6.2 qts with new filter element, which most here know.

I went out and changed mine last month, let it drain, put new filter element on, put 6 qts in, and was definitely under the full mark.

Asked my neighbor mechanic what he thought about it not being not at the very top, and he said, it’s not that big of a deal, but it’s recommended especially when you start pushing the engine in high RPMs that you have the allotted oil that Toyota states in service manual, to thoroughly lubricate the engine.

Let's not forget that the dip stick on this truck is about as useless as tits on a bull. Because of all the crazy bends it goes through, its way more likely to indicate fuller than the actual oil level. My proceedure for checking the oil level (stolen from another member) is to fill the oil, start the engine and let it come up to temp, turn off the engine, remove the dip stick and set it aside, wait 10 to 20 minutes for the oil in the dip stick tube to settle, check the oil level. Personally, I would rather put in the 6.2 and call it a day. 0.2 quarts too much or too little is not really going to hurt anything, though I would prefer to err on the too full side.

Btw, if you are annoyed by the extra hoops you have to jump through to check the engine oil level, just wait until you find out about Toyota's proceedure for checking the ATF. :D

I usually let my truck sit over night to check the oil level as the dipstick is not the easiest thing to read.

Its like 1 quart from the low to full mark on the dipstick. You are well within the operating range with 6 quarts. Do you check your oil EVERY fill-up? Sees like most don't. Why worry about 0.2 quarts if you aren't worried about checking your oil regularly? Seems like conflicting thought processes.

I add 6 quarts, and I check my oil once every couple fill ups. To me, thats about the right amount of effort regarding proper oil level.

PS...As I lift the hood on my newish vehicle to check the oil while filling up, I can't recall the last time I looked around and saw anyone else doing the same. I do remember one person making a comment basically asking why I was bothering on such a new vehicle.
