2 baby seats (twins) in 2008 Tacoma access cab?

    Hi,
    we're expecting twins in 6 months. (woohoo!/help...)
We have a 2008 Tacoma acces cab.
(I think that's what it's called....the one with the suicide door and platform seats)

The last thing I want to do is sell it, so I'm wondering if TWO baby seats are able to be put in the access cab.
I see yellow labels with car seat instructions for one seat behind the passenger seat, but unsure about two.

*Note: just looked up, Ontario laws require rear facing baby seats for newborns until 20lbs

If it will work, are there any problems might I run into down the road?

congrats brother... and it might depend on your states safety regulations. I had a ford ranger access cab and had to sell it to get a taco double cab when my daughter was born. You might not like the response but it might be a good time to upgrade to a double cab. Platform seats are small and car seats are large. You will probably need to move your seat more forward and that will be super uncomfortable for you.

Unfortunately, I personally think it is time to look into trading the AC into a DC

I can't comment on the truck (I have a DC), but I can on the twins. I had identical twin boys. It is an amazing experience. My daughter was my first born, and there's nothing like your first, but having twins is a completely different experience. Yes, there will be times you have your hands full, but watching the development of twins is something special.

Congrats, man. Enjoy! Oh, and start working out your shoulders now for when you have to carry two infant seats at the same time.

Do you have friends/family with car seats you can experiment with? Better yet, get the 2 you need now and test fit. You’re gonna want to know from first hand experience- the sooner the better especially to know if it’s not going to work..

    Congratulations!!

I agree with @windsor . It’s time for another vehicle.

I don’t think Tacomas are family vehicles even double cabs but no way I’m putting kids in an access cab.

Congrats man! I've got a 05 access cab, and a 10 month old in a rear facing seat on the passenger side. i'm glad my wife is only 5'2" cause her seat all most all the way pushed forward. It's a really tight fit back there for baby seats and honestly i couldn't imagine trying to drive with a baby seat behind me, I'm 5'11" and my know would be kissing the dash.

But of luck to you man!

Get another truck. Father in law had an Access Cab. Zero chance I would put two rear facing car seats in there, unless you are 5ft tall and your wife is tiny as well. Not practical or comfortable AT ALL. I have a doublecab and it sucks having car seats back there ( granted three of them)

Double cab in your future, or better yet a fullsize.

Congrats on the new additions. You are in for a ride my friend!

Even in my 15' double cab, the infant seats were tight. I contemplated selling it all the time, my wife who is like 5'4" could barely sit in the front seat. Now that it is forward facing car seats it is okay.

Is it possible to mix up one for the other and they grow up their whole lives with the other name?

OMG - I am so glad I am past all that child seat crap. Those things are a big PITA. And they are enormous. Luckily, my wife drives an SUV so it wasn't too big of a problem for me except that I was driving a first gen AC and those did not have the suicide doors for the AC like the 2nd gens. Getting the kid into a rear facing seat through the front door was not fun and the front passenger seat was pretty much unusable. So if it was just me picking the kid up from day care or something it was workable and if we were all going out as a family, we had to take her SUV. Not too long after, I traded up to a double cab second gen. So much better plus I was on my third kid and needed a fifth seat especially since the older kids were no longer comfortable in the jump seats in back (knees in chest).

Do yourself a favor and just trade up now. If your wife has a small car, you may want to go with an SUV instead of a pickup truck (or minivan if you can stomach it - as much as I hate them, they are versatile and very convenient). Kids do not travel light and pickup truck beds, even with tonneau or caps don't always stay dry. If you haul stuff a lot, a small utility trailer sometimes works out better than a pickup bed for length, load height, capacity.....

    +1 to this ^
Rear facing seats in the back of a double cab make you scoot the front seats wayyy up. I tolerated it for a trip every once in awhile, but it's a no-go for the main baby hauler.

I hate to say it, but you may want to sell or un-insure the Tacoma until the kids are in forward facing seats:(
I *think* 2008's have anchors for car seats on both sides, don't they?
Assuming you aren't 6'4", there is ample room for 2 forward facing car seats and 2 normal sized adults in an access cab. Different car seats are different sizes, so shop around (It also all depends on what "ample" means to you as well.)

In my 2017 AC I never tried to put the rear facing (or front facing) seats in my truck. I am 5’8” with all my height in my upper body and stubby legs. It was tough even finding a booster seat to fit comfortably and have our front seats set at our normal forward / rearward positions. I am sure in a pinch some larger seats would work or even the rear or forward facing seats but you could tell it wouldn’t be easy. I am not sure if I would want to do this day to day in an AC or if it is truly possible.

Hit up a store that will allow you to go outside and actually set a seat into your truck. I am not talking full install just set them in place. That is the best way to gauge how much room you will have.

In my case I knew my daughter would always be in my wife's car for the first few years. Lately she has done the odd trip with the seat bottom only booster seat in the access cab. For a 4 year old it works. Maybe later it will be an issue but I really don’t want a double cab especially if I am buying something for the 12 trips it will be (/could be) needed during my ownership. Many people try to accommodate every single scenario when vehicle shopping. We were realistic. How many times do we need the truck when the car won’t work and we can’t take 2 vehicles and must have our daughter with us? One trip when we picked up my wife’s Traeger smoker across the border in Michigan would have fit this scenario. We dropped our daughter off at Nana’s and went without her. Eliminated the whole issue completely. In many cases you can work around the problem if you try. If however the Tacoma is a primary transportation for your kids and you can’t avoid using it daily then I would reconsider the AC. In my 2 years of ownership my daughter has gone from age 2 to 4 and has been in the truck 6 times max since moving to a booster seat. 5 of those trips were less than 3 minutes. My wife suffered with her previous car during our rear facing stage and made due without too much agony. Once we went front facing her coupe wasn’t going to work at all so we made the new car purchase then (which we had already shopped and decided on a year earlier). Initially we thought we had to buy a new car on the day we came home from the hospital.

Test drive the car seats and buy a DBL cab if your real usage is critical and unavoidable.

    Congrats first of all!
I have a bit of knowledge base on this subject.....I benefited from a coworker, when his wife was pregnant with their 1st child. I bought his near new 1989 Toyota truck 2dr, bench seat, single cab. About 10 years later, my wife found out we were having twins, her boss was able to set her up with a Ford Explorer, instead of a Taurus for a company vehicle. I get to keep my truck. Four more years later, wife finds out she's expecting another set of twins....coincidentally, as it was nearing turn in time for the explorer. We then bought a year old Expedition with 2nd row captains chair seating, made getting baby seats in and out easier as well as access to the 3rd row for the booster seat for the 4 yrd old girls. 3 vehicle family - 2 drivers (I still get to keep my truck) A few years ago with the younger twins now close to 6 years old, we went into the Ford dealer again to up grade to a newer model Expedition, walked out with another year old Expedition and a new F150 4 Dr (wife somewhat pushed me on the concept of being able to take the all the kids, everywhere at once in the truck). The now 22 year old Toyota was tired, rusted and had served me well, but time to move on, so I sold it. The F150 had all sorts of nuisance problems from the start, but I did like it, but not love it like to older Toyota. Ironically, the 09 Expedition has been a gem to own. However, the F150 was just traded on a 2018 TRO OR DCSB 2 weeks ago, so I'm back. That being said, my 17 yr old girls find the rear seat a bit small in the 4 dr (not a direct comparison to an access cab with car seats) The part that will "crush" you is all the baby stuff that goes with 2 small infants, if you have to travel any distance. As my good friend, who is a former Marine, said "this baby thing is gear intensive" Baby bags, pack n plays, clothing bags, etc. use to take up a bunch of space when visiting our parents. Things get much easier, as with all children after the first couple of years. I hope you can possibly keep your truck as a second vehicle - Best of luck and Congrats again - Bill in MA

This is a great thread. I'm considering buying a 2nd gen AC or possibly a DC. I prefer the AC so that I can have more bed space for when I need the truck for actual truck stuff. We have a 3yo and one little one on the way. We've had a 4th Gen 4Runner that works great for our needs and I'm thinking it'll be good to have another vehicle that can fit a car seat in it when we need to.

What type(s) of car seat mounts are in a 2nd gen AC? I'm looking at one locally that is a 2006.

What am I missing here. With soon to be 2 kids, why even consider an AC after everyone said they are useless with kids?
