2.7L Toyota oil filter ... WTF?

So here we go ... New 2020 4x4 SR with 2.7L. 2.9K miles on it right now.
So, no matter what the dealer says, I want to change the oil (Breaking engine in) before my first 'freebie' oil/filter change at 10K miles. (I'll do all the free ones Toyota wants to give me and plan on doing all my own afterwards.) I was planning on changing oil/filter at 3K miles.
So I ordered a six-pac of Toyota filters (90915-YZZD1) and a 20-pack of the crush washers for the drain plug on the pan on the internet a while back..
So what looks like the easiest way to get to the filter is with one of those 'cup' type wrenches that fit on the end of the filter and you use a 3/8" ratchet on.
So, off to the parts store I go, with Toyota filter in hand.
I went to NAPA ... O'Rielly's ... AutoZone .... All three of those places had 9-10-11 different ones hanging on the wall. None of them fit.
So, is this gonna be a specialized tool I'll have to buy from the dealer for future use? I don't really mind if I have too, but I'm thinking it's kinda' a dick move on Toyota's part if they want you to use Genuine Toyota Filters. (And they obviously want you to bring yer rig into the dealer for everything..)
Funny thing is, I have a couple of WIX filters (51348XP) filters left over from a previous rig, that happen to be the replacement for the above mentioned Toyota part number. You can find filter wrenches for those all day long.
Another quick question if anyone knows .. Since when I take my rig in for the dealer oil/filter changes .. I'm guessing that the oil Toyota uses says something like 'Genuine Toyota Motor Oil' on the bottles. Who makes their oil? I usually use Moible 1 .. On everything ... But I'd rather stick to what's been used for until my freebie changes are used up and then I'm on my own.

Wow! After all the whining about the 3.5l cartridge, we now have this.

This exact tool used to be $4 at HF:
    https://www.amazon.com/TEKTON-5866-12-Inch-Filter-Pliers/dp/B000NPR33O

Current HF tool: Use either of those for removal. I think just about anyone can hand tighten to 3/4 to 1 full turn?

Is it can type filter? Can you not use a band style wrench?

Well, that's what my thoughts are too ... I've read on ... Jeeez ... Probably a dozen different websites and the OEM Toyota filters always seem to be in the Top 5, so I have no prob with sticking with those. (And I bought 6 of them) I'm just frustrated that I can't (Easily) find the proper filter wrench to fit the OEM filters. The kind of filter wrenches I saw at the stores... Ehh ... $6-7.00 each.
I'm just envisioning going to the dealer and getting the correct cup-wrench and them charging me $50.00 for it..

My local Toyota dealer's parts guy told me the Toyota motor oil is Mobil 1. I've been using it for years with no issues. Just get the one with the greenish label that says something like, "Recommended for Honda, Toyota,..."

Just get a either oil filter pliers or an oil filter claw that goes on a ratchet.
You are definitely over thinking a very simple tool.

Uhhh ... I never 'whined' about the 6 cyl filter. I just found it crazy that in 2020/21 ... Toyota is still using 1955 technology, so far as oil filters go. But hey ... Not my prob, so whatever.
Thanks for your suggestions. Getting to the filter isn't as easy as just slapping on the ol' strap wrench though. But I appreciate your help though.

Something like this will probably work. I have a bunch of different ones cup ones, pliers, band wrench and the one that I always end up going back to is this cheap Fram one if you can get it in there.

    https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p...GwNIRG8igtxGm2nf7JRoCbgwQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Fram one. It works like a ratchet so you don't have to take it off each time to get another turn. So its great in cramped spots.

    You're welcome.

What I meant was that the 3.5l cartridge is continually ripped on here when mainly it is a tech installation issue.

Everyone has a hard on for the old school canister filters and esp the top mount location on the 2nd Gen 4.0l.

I have this much to grasp on my bike. So, the jaw-type comes in handy. As does the K&N filter with the 7/16in welded on nut for installation.

From BITOG they said TGMO 0W20 is most likely made by Mobil 1

Its so easy to remove. You can buy a k&n filter to remove it with a wrench or socket if that's what you prefer

That’s what I used when I had my 08 2.7. That 1 inch nut made it a very easy filter change.

    1. I bet your dealership will do your free two oil changes whenever you want.
    2. I bet you don't even need a tool to get that filter off. As long as they didn't go all gorilla at the factory putting it on.

I've always liked the plier type for smaller filters and the belt type ones for the big truck filters. But then again, I work on fleet vehicles now so if the filter is too damn tight, the only person I can blame is myself :anonymous:
