If the folks with 3.5 autos are going to 4.88's from 3.90 when they put on 33's then a 2.7 would go from 4.30 to 5.29?

    Educate me....

I would love 5.29s in my 3.5 Auto but they don't make them. 5.29 teeth would probably be so thin anyway they would get shredded outside of calm easy driving.

As far as I know there are only 4.56 and 4.88

Well the math would put you at 4.56 to get back to stock but going higher might be better. You multiply your current gear by your new tires then divide by your old tires to get your new stock gear
    33 X 4.30 divided by 31 = 4.57

8” clamshell is an 8” clamshell on Tacoma, 4runner and FJ. Same gear set as a FJ80 drop out third 8” high pinion.

The 5.29:1 8.75” in Mike’s truck are the prototype set. Note I said “a set out in the wild”.

40” tires and daily driving makes it not so moot.

Have run 5.29:1 in my ‘85 for 300k+ miles no issues they are plenty strong.

    I see.

5.29s get blown all the time, teeth are weak.

The point about them being moot is specific to the taco box.

I still would like a set in my truck. My buddy ordered the taco box so waiting to see the results

Abuse can break anything. I’ve run mine with 35” rollers , 37”daily driving & 40” tires wheeling and not had any issues.

Copy on the taco box specific. Believe he did it for drivability sake.

I ran Yukon 5.29 in my old '91 (and it was still even IFS, so a 7.5" in front) with 33x10.50. I wasn't doubled but did have Marlin's 4.7 gear set in the transfer. The teeth aren't any thinner, it's that the pinion has fewer teeth (37/7 in my Yukons) so there's a lower mesh count. They held up fine for me but I was a weenie and never beat on my truck, being a daily driver. Practically speaking, though, I felt 5.29 + 33" is too low unless you're just building it for trail use, but that was a 22R-E + W56, so the auto in this case might make it more tolerable. Mine were set up by Robbie @ Slee and I took care breaking them in, which I think makes the bigger difference keeping teeth in place so they'll last if you don't shear the pinion.
