    Hello TW,

I’m interested in upgrading my speakers and adding a powered subwoofer to my truck. What size are the OEM speakers in the front doors and in the rear passenger area? Is it 6 1/4” or is it a different size?

@Purpleman: Thank you for the link and the information on the website. I thought it was 6.5”, but wasn’t sure about it as I was relying on the information from Crutchfield which was kind of vague. I’m about ready to pull the trigger on buying a set of new 6.5” car speakers soon.

These changed in the 1st gen at some point, but my '03 xcab comes with 5x7 stock front and rear. I believe the '99 uses the same setup, but not sure. You can squeeze in 6.5", but it will take some work - perhaps cutting a little metal along with custom adapters. I'm using 5.5" up front with custom adapters made from cutting boards. No metal cutting required for that, but have been tinkering with 6.5 and that is going to be far tougher. It can be done, but is far from plug & play. If yours are 5x7, expect a significant amount of work to get 6.5" drivers to fit.

I'm running 6.5" on my front doors with custom adapters in my 04 dcsb.

I "might" jump up to 8" in the doors, still thinking about it though.

Sorry I don't have any of the front doors, but I plan to remove the door panels this week and can snap some at that time.

I've been wanting more impact in the front stage and thought upgrading to an 8" would do it but turns out it's more of a tuning issue than a speaker size. I adjusted my eq settings and boy did it make a difference. I still however like the idea of an 8" up front!

I'm looking at upgrading as well and Crutchfield says that the 6x8s will fit in the front (and rear) doors of a 2003 DC. Any confirmation on this? Will I have to make cuts?

From their options I can get more power out of a 6x8 than the 5x7 at a lower cost.

I'm fairly new to the car audio installation world. I just know I can't deal with the factory speakers any more...

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe 6x8 and 5x7 are the same nominal size.

Do you have a local shop you can visit to hear what those sound like?

Something is telling me yes but I'm not 100% sure.

This is a 6X8 and 5X7 make sure you get a speaker that is cut for both sizes. They are basically the same speaker just the mounting tabs are at different locations. Here is a good example of what I am talking about with this Alpine. See all the extra holes?

This is my head unit here, it,s "mech-less" radio, which simply means "No Moving Parts" and also keep in mind for bluetooth hands free get a unit that has a seperate mic, some units have the mic on the face of the radio.

Yes, that radio is being discontinued, that is why it’s no longer on their website. If you do find one it’s New Old stock. I can still get them, but they are refurbished and do not come in it’s original box. $400 is not bad for a mechless with navigation and Apple play, the one I have in my Tacoma works great, love the navigation, it’s flawless!
