I apologize in advance because I feel like I should've been able to find this info on my own, but after lots of trying, I cannot. I posted this in the tires/wheels forum this morning, but so far no replies.

I have a 2002 TRD 4x4 SR5 ext cab with 6-lug 16" alloy stock wheels, stock height (no lift). I would like to swap those out for satin/matte black wheels, and if possible I would like to widen the stance just a little bit (nothing too crazy, just want a slightly more aggressive look). Just an inch or more.

Best I can tell, I have a 16x7 rim with 6x139.7 lug pattern, but I have no idea about backspacing or offset. FYI I'm running Duratracs 265/75/16

Can anyone tell me exactly what I should be looking at? I like the AR Baja, but I'm having a hard time understanding the wheel specs and don't want to order something that doesn't fit. Duratrcas don't rub now, but I'm worried they might if I'm not careful about what I choose.

    THANK YOU

Essentially I think I just need to know the stock 1st gen 16" TRD (6 lug) rim specs, specifically the offset and backspacing. Anyone?

There are a handful of different stock 16" first gen Tacoma wheels. but as far as I know the majority of them are around 4.5" backspacing or so. You can measure this yourself by taking the wheel off.

These were my old steel rims that I measured the backspacing on. 3.75"

You can convert offset to backspacing and visa versa with this chart

I wish more wheel companies would just publish the backspacing and the width, rather than offset.

At least as far as possible interference with your suspension or frame, backspacing is what matters. I don't really care where the middle of my rim is relative to the mount surface.

The dumb thing about offset, is that you'd think a 9" wide rim with zero offset would have a 4.5" backspace (half the rim width), but NOOOOOOO, the two are measured from different parts of the rim.

The stock 16" toyota alloys will be marked on the inside as +15mm of offset. This equates to ~4 9/16" of backstacing on a 7" wide wheel.

Use the chart posted above to compare to the specs for the wheels you are looking to buy.

If you are staying with 16" wheels, 8" wide is common. A 16x8 wheel with 0 offset is equal to 4.5" of backspacing. Since this wheel will be 1" wider than what you have now with very similar BS to what you have now, the outside of the wheel will end up being about .5" further outboard from what you have now.

My personal choice is a 16x8 with 4" of BS (-12mm offset) which is about 1" further outboard over the stock wheel. I hope this is helpful.

I'd say your 16x8, 4" BS wheel would be a better choice, since that should keep the rim's inside edge about the same distance from the frame as the stock wheel.

If the OP is not rubbing the frame now with his 32s, reducing BS will not cause it to rub on the frame simply by going to a wheel with less BS.

No, the more likely scenario is that his 32s will start rubbing on the pinch weld area by going to a wheel with less backspacing. Nothing a big hammer can't fix.

It's offset that moves the tire, irrespective of wheel size. For instance, a 16x8 and a 16x9 with the same offset will position a tire in the same place relative to the suspension components, even though they have different BS. Since the section widths of the tires are much wider than the wheels in this hobby, offset is what actually matters.

That's because they're based on completely different measurements. Backspace takes into account the exterior of the bead seat flange, whereas offset is calculated from the wheel width - which is a bead-to-bead measurement of the inside of the wheel for the purposes of tire fitment.

It gets confusing because folks want BS to be the easy go-to measurement for wheel & tire fitment, and it isn't.

    Thanks y'all!!

Going with some of these because they're flat black, cheap, and get good reviews. Also because the truck pictured is exactly the same as mine and I dig the look/stance. Should look great with my Duratracs. I can get 5 of them for $467 out the door at a shop near me. I'll need (want) black lugs and the mount/balance, but yeah, stoked. Thanks again!
