Hey everyone! Just purchased an 04 Tacoma double cab with a snug top. I’m wanting to restore some of the weather stripping and get a new pop out lock and having trouble finding a good source online.

    Is Mysnug.com a legit source?

also the weather stripping on the back window is on the outside and touching the tailgate - over time it has left a mark on the paint. Is this how the stripping was installed originally?

and finally, is it possible to convert the sliding windows into external tilts with hydraulic shocks?

thanks for all the help, excited to be part of the community!

Congrats on the purchase and welcome to TW. mysnug has been around for a long time but with the pandemic, I'd call before ordering anything. Make sure they're still doing business.

Can also try Amazon. What weather stripping are you replacing? If its the main seal for the cap to frame rails, go with this. Its a solid product. If you do use it, be sure to follow the prep instructions. Remove any leftover adhesive/original foam seal before installing.
    https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NCC0SY6/

Depending on the model of Snugtop, Amazon might also have the poplock you need. If not, check with your local cap dealer. Just give them the serial number on your cap and they'll be able to access a listing of parts for you. When I need to replace the lock on a Snugtop Supersport cap, local dealer had it in stock. Saved me from scouring the web for it.

Looks like you updated your post. OK, so that long seal at the bottom edge of the hatch/door, yeah its normal. As long as its in good condition, I'd say leave it.

The side windows to windoors... possibly but will be $expensive$. Again, check with your local cap dealer and they will be able to quote a direct price from snugtop if its possible for your model of cap. To give you an idea, I just replaced the rear hatch/door with frame and it was about $500.

Share some pics when its all finished.

thanks for all that info! I have ordered the pop lock off mysnug it’s being delivered by end of the week.

Is it possible to maintain the original truck bed plastic liner with the cap on? The PO made some cut outs for the clamps it appears? Looks a little messy I’m hoping I can have it without cut outs with original clamps.

Is the weather stripping around the hatch - is that how it should be?

Any idea what cap model I have? There are no snug tops dealers in PA from my search on their site. P

At this point since the holes are already cut into the drop in bed liner, :notsure:

From your pics, it looks like some of the original hooks are still installed. Not sure why PO added the big clamps unless the originals were having issues.

For that seal you posted a pic of, its ok to snip off the end of it or just leave it as-is. On my leer cap, I sliced the excess off just at the point where it contacted the top of the tailgate. Up to you really.

On the driver's side of the cap you should see a plate that looks like similar to this -

That cap looks great BTW. Tracks up on the roof with towers and crossbars... nice find.

thanks man! You are a wealth of knowledge. A couple more questions and I will leave you alone haha -

where can I find the weather stripping for around the tailgate hatch window in the pic I uploaded? I’m just looking to replace all the rubber I can since it’s old.

and when the pop lock is in locked position, there is some play when pulling the window trying to open it , is that normal? I would expect a snug fit when locked

No worries. You can adjust the lock. Depending on the way the latching mech is, it might look something like this on the sides. The plate may have and adjustment range to it, check it out. If not and it looks nothing like this (lol), take a pic and post it.

    upload_2021-7-20_7-57-19.jpg

On the seals, you would just check around on Amazon or any other site you come across. The one you ordered the lock from might have it. I just found this site this morning searching for your OE snugtop clamps. I have no experience with them so order at your own risk. https://www.siraweb.com/ Perhaps call and talk to someone live before ordering. https://www.siraweb.com/door-bulb-seal

If the seal looks intact and in decent condition, no reason to replace it.
Amazon has something similar, not sure on measurements...

also this one, which is essentially the same as above -

thanks for the resources. Here is my locking mechanism below. Is it just me or does the pop lock look like it’s installed upside down. The third pic shows it in locked position.

And also a pic of what the bottom weather stripping has done to the tailgate.

That definitely isn't the locking mech I was thinking about - sorry. I want to say parts are missing but that just may have been how they had it on the earliest of the caps. When I think of latching mech on a snugtop I think of this
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...stalled-wrong-pics-snugtop-supersport.721674/

You absolutely positive this cap is for your taco? Just noticed this but to me, this is wrong. The hatch frame shouldn't extend over the tail gate. It may simply be a positioning issue. If its like this on both sides, not sure to be honest. Been some time since I had a snugtop on the truck.

Replacing that seal might help, looks like it has the bulb on it as well. Could probably use either one.

wow it looks like I’m missing the whole mechanism and other bits near the pop lock LOL. I guess I will have to call SnugTop and provide my serial number and go from there? Or are the locking mechanisms all the same with SnugTop? Here are better pictures of the alignment, i think it looks correct?

Edit - called SnugTop , looks like mine doesn’t have all that linkage. I wonder if it can be retrofitted

Did they confirm the cap was in fact meant for the 02-04 taco?

I just don't remember my Snugtop Supersport extending over the tailgate like that.

Looks like it's OK as this one is extending over a bit as well. Hey, if it works, right?

Actually mine is a nice flush mount if you see the pics I attached above. SnugTop confirmed it’s for the short bed 04 Tacoma. I also confirmed with snugparts the cab hi SnugTops for first gen did not come with a rotary latching mechanism. The ends of the rods slide behind the frame as the locking mechanism, no striker latch or anything. So pretty basic locking mechanism but it works haha. I think I may adapt some type of barrel bolt action the rod can slide into for additional security. But looks like everything hardware wise is there!

thanks for working through it with me Mike.

Just FYI, the rod style lock is really easy to break. Someone ripped mine open by yanking hard on the hatch handle, which ripped the rivets that hold the rod guides in. If there was something that turned down behind the tailgate it would be much harder to do that.

Good to know. Did you have a pop lock installed? It seems difficult to prop it open enough and leverage it open with the pop lock since there’s nothing to pull on

I'm not even sure what a pop lock is. I just have a t-handle that turns 90 degrees

Gotcha yea with the t handle you can pull it and force it open, but with the pop lock the handle stays flush with the hatch so there’s nowhere to get leverage from. I’m pretty sure you can convert it to add security.

Got a link? I'm intrigued. I just built my own power locks for the side windows but I haven't figured out something for the back yet.

Oh I see, so it just pops out once you unlock it. Probably wouldn't work for what I have planned but you are right, that would be much harder to break into.
