Ive got a 97 reg cab 4banger auto 4x4 on 31’s w/4.10 gears city 16mpg, all highway 20 is the best I seen.

I also have a 95.5 w/ the 3.4 auto 4x4 ext cab gets 15 city and 18 hwy. I forget the rear end on this badboy.

What I learned is that all these trucks dont get great gas mileage and never will mid teens is basically it. I also have a fj cruiser and a tundra and a gx470 all mid teens and 4x4’s.

My fave is the reg cab.

My 03 DC gets around 17mpg just driving around. Highway miles, I've gotten 21mpg driving to Texas and back to NC several years ago. Worst was when I cleaned my TB and MAF, dropped down to around 13mpg for a few days, then back to 17ish. I don't expect honda civic gas milage out of a 4x4 truck with AT.

95.5 ext cab, 3.4L, auto, 4x4, manual lockouts, 3.91 gear ratio, 16" 245 street treads, 260,000 miles: mixed driving 18-19mpg. Never done a highway only, but I'd think on relatively flat terrain I could get 21-22 at around 55-60mph. That would be approx 1800rpm.

almost always around 19.0-20.1mpg regardless of city/hwy mix

I was surprised that during 1 trip of almost entirely 80-85mph it was 21mpg. I am yet to validate if that was an anomaly or if the engine is a little happier @ 3,000+rpm than 2,500

I have switched the transmission & tx case from 80W-90 to 15W-40 Diesel Engine Oil and found it is much smoother, no grinding on hard acceleration or at low RPM's, and right in the same mpg range as before. After this drain, I'll check the fluid for wear metals, then move down to 10W-30 DEO. I expect that to increase the mpg's by around +/-2mpg.

Screenshot from Fuelly. That 21+ mpg was fueling up then immediately getting onto the freeway and driving 70 miles and fulling up again immediately exiting the freeway after I replaced the air filter, spark plugs, balance and tire rotation and the most important part, topped off the wiper fluid. No stop and go, just smooth freeway driving.

2002 Double Cab V6, 265k miles, 2.5" lift but still street tires.

Best has been 22mpg, mostly highway. Worst was 15mpg with a lot of towing and hauling. Average around 19mpg. Tires are 235/85/16 Load Range E Wildpeaks.

2003 V6 auto 18-22 mostly hwy at 65, anything over that drops quick. Let ppl go around as I enjoy my drive, windows down... Also weather will affect, always 87 non ethanol gives best results.

Anything that gets 20 I am good with.

My 96' 5 lug 5 speed regularly got me high 20's, the best being in the low 30's, the worst, couldn't tell you because I primarily only payed attention would I thought I'd get good milage. God how I miss that kinda milage...

So far, in about an oil change worth of ownership, my best mpg in my '03 dcsb auto, I got 21mpg, but probably average 18, with the worst so far, being 16.5mpg.

Both trucks got best milage with back country roads with really tight turns (lower avg speed, like 40-50) and lots of grade changes (more coasting).

When I had my 04 dc 4x4. I got as low as 8mpg on a sai and stock oxygen sensor in the city. I was able to get it to 10-12mpg. After going back to the stock air box, replacing the maf, a/f sensor and driving like a grandma.

best ever was on the highway 17mpg.

‘96 3.4L Ext Cab, stock height with shell and some weight in back (sleeping platform, camping/fishing gear, etc). About 230,000 on the odometer. Falken Wildpeak tires in 235/75r15. Fuel efficiency bounces all over, best was 23.5, worst was 15 (lots of east coast I-95 stop and go traffic and with a 20 cubic foot storage box on top of the rack). Average is at 18.7, but I only started keeping track in June and a lot of those miles were going cross country with the storage box on top.

I've gotten 18mpg ONCE. Highway average is like 14-15. Street is like 12. (This is all pre-turbo and 35s). I have no effing clue why mine's always been so bad - I've tried everything.

    So like 10mpg? o_O

I had a 2000 Prerunner 3.4 for several years and with mostly highway it would do 21-22mpg. My current 2.4 5spd does 23-23.5 no matter how it's driven which is both surprisingly bad and surprisingly consistent.

2004 Prerunner with the 3.4L & auto slushbox, 2.5" OME lift, ARB bumper & ARE Shell - best I've ever gotten was 21.3 going downhill on a highway. I seem to average 14.5-15 regardless of when I'm on the highway or in the city.
