Some of you may or may not know I have been involved in a lawsuit with Toyota for approaching 2 years now. We thought it was going to settle months ago, but... Although, I love my Tacoma, will never sell it, and plan on my next purchase being an FJ! (FUCK TOYOTA on this, you guys need to know!)

The whole problem started almost 2 years ago when my head gaskets failed and Toyota not admitting that there was an issue with heat and 1GR-FE engines manufactured between 2004 and early 2006.

Everything below is to be understood as an "hypothetical case" ... fictional, whatever removes myself from any liability!

After examining several 1GR-FE engines, from Tacoma's and FJ's, manufactured between 2004-2008 an anomaly may have been found. Again, all hypothetical, but Toyota seems to have been making slight alterations to coolant jackets in the 1GR-FE engines due to over heating of the rear cylinders.

This affects the head gaskets and now, I think we discovered the fuel injectors to! Almost all engines examined suffered from varying degrees of gasoline smell in engine oil. Once removing the upper and lower oil pans every engine except the 2009 FJ engine showed "red' streak on on the wall of cylinder 6... meaning... well you know... fuel injector stuck/leaking.

The the 2009 FJ, same symptoms, but cylinder 5.

Here is the kicker... engines manufactured between 2004 and 2006, the affects were way worse. Between 2007-2009, less, until the point where the 2009 FJ was on another cylinder. Maybe coincidence, but it matches Toyota's revisions to the jackets.

This is why this is very IMPORTANT!

Believe me, don't believe me, but I am sharing this for your benefit.

The cooling of the cylinder seems to not only affect the head gasket, but also affects the fuel injectors on the rear cylinders! Why does this matter???

When the fuel injector is over heated, it can get stuck open!

Anyone want to chime in here???? The fuel system stays pressurized so when you wake up in the morning to go to work, your 1GR-FE is ready to go! If an injector is stuck, while you sleep, gasoline leaks into the cylinder, past the rings, into your engine oil, which degrades viscosity.

Long story short, if you pull your dipstick to check your oil, or change your oil and it smells REALLY strong of gasoline, pull at least your lower oil pan and send an endoscope in to inspect cylinders 6 and 5 for signs of leakage. Will save your engine!!!!!!!!!!!!

(injectors on the left are from 2008 FJ 1GR-FE, the first injector from the left is one of the other injectors, the second injector from the left is cylinder 6, on the right are from 2005 TACOMA 1GR-FE with cylinder 6 the 3rd injector from the left and the last one from one of the other cylinders.

    More to come, stay tuned!

Toyota has a long history of denying problems and then quietly fixing them. I love my truck, but I have had to work many of these issues out myself. The result is that my trust in the brand is just about zero.

Pretty much every brand does this in some fashion. My 13’ Ford Focus SE 5spd manual wouldn’t turn on one day, you would have to charge the battery for some time and then it would somewhat turn over but when you turned it off, there was no power running anywhere afterward, you couldn’t unlock the doors. We swapped the battery thinking it was just that but it still wouldn’t turn over. Then had a 3rd party shop take a look at alternator and starter, nothing, all good. Took it to ford because that was the last resort. It’s been known in the past that the TCM is bad and many have complained about it, but FERD doesn’t acknowledge it. They had it for 2 days, called and said it was ready. I asked what was wrong, quote the manager “nothing”. She turned over perfectly fine now, have had her 6 months now and no issues as all. Everyone lies. I’m glad op did his own work and spent the time and effort to move forward with this.

Friend's F150 would crank, but no faults. Just wouldn't start. After hours of time at a dealer, and engineer came and swapped out the ecu. Problem solved.

 for me, my 17’ lariat hasn’t had any major issues yet, just one of the main bolts they use for the rear airbag seatbelts liked to shear off during testing lol but it’s all good now.

I heard my fuel pump running on my 07 just now, it’s been sitting turned off for about 8 hours. It ran for a while, I’m not sure if it’s just repriming the fuel system or what... but it made me think of this thread. My oil does smell a bit like gas, but I do a lot of repeated short trips so I’m sure that’s a lot of it.

Its the evap system doing a self check.
Your manual should cover it somewhere in the booklet.

From page 22 of online 2015 Tacoma Owners manual:

Noise from under vehicle after turning off the engine
Approximately five hours after the engine is turned off, you may hear sound
coming from under the vehicle for several minutes. This is the sound of a fuel
evaporation leakage check and, it does not indicate a malfunction.

This is very interesting so whats the recommendation here? have fuel injectors tested, rebuilt and run it for another 200K ? I noticed last oil change the gas smell in the oil but chalked it up to short trips, and lots of idling but I am going to investigate this further now

mine has no misfires and runs like a top but that smell of gas in the oil is what had me confused

edit: did you just replace the one injector or did you have it tested?
