So hoping someone with recent experience can help me. My 99 Tacoma SR5 Xtracab has a frame rust issue (shocking I know) in the driver side read where the spring mount is. I took it in for the recall years ago an the dealership said it was fine. I took it to someone who was going to patch some small plates for reinforcement in the area that honestly did more damage than good. Can you all or do you all recommend any repair plates/covers for half the rear drivers side and how much with labor have any of you spent for such repairs? Thanks

Will these completely secure the frame even if part of it is almost rusted in 2? Also I can see the cost of the parts any idea on how labor intensive this is? My fear is that it will be a nightmare on labor!

Need to have top portion of frame intact to weld the cap to.
    Their shops can work miracles.

I just recently used safety caps on my 96.. nice product, but time consuming to install and do it right.

Yeah labor cost and my fear is that the POS guy that was supposed to reinforce the area may have done more damage than good. Because the plates he welded on are gonna make that section wider than it was.

What treatment was used inside your frame after repairs were made ?

Sounds like whoever fixes it will have there hands full but anything that guy did sounds like it can be undone. If you cant do it yourself just be sure to find someone who is reputable who can. Remember cheap isnt always better.

Well I certainly can't afford thousands of dollars for sure but cheaper is certainly not better. I have kept OEM everything on this since the day I bought it but a 15,000$ frame replacement is not an option obviously.

Nothing was done to the inside of the frame. Which again is why I know how much of a mistake I made not including his horrible welding in general.

Appreciate the information I will look into it. That is a ways away from me but I do know of a very good welder now so maybe its just getting the parts and having him install them. Pulling the gas tank/lines etc is going to be time consuming but I would hope I could get out of there for under 1000$ parts labor an all and finally have my issue permanently repaired. I dont even have 200,000 miles yet so still have alot of life left on it.

Last job I bid was $2500.00 plus extra parts . Now with higher steel prices it might be $3000.00 plus.

Until you start taking things apart you have no idea just what else might break.

Before starting figure out just how bad things really are I venture it is quite a bit worse .

    Good luck!

Ty Bivouac and I do know its is going to be worse as the truck spent most its life in the mountains in VA an they are very heavy on the salt in the winter. My hope is as far as the frame this spot will be the only trouble area. I have a feeling her days are numbered but if I can get another year maybe 2 ill pay a little. The information you just shared may have me rethinking that even with the bluebook values thru the roof right now. As so many other Taco owners have said before me F!@#$&! Frames. Might I ask did you repair using the product above or something else?

FWIW I’m installing a SafeTcap this weekend on a borked bit of frame, granted DIY with a buddy’s welder. Cap was $260 shipped

Yeah sure wish the parts was all I had to worry about as I would gladly throw the elbow grease in with a good welder/mechanic. Ive been able to accomplish alot of DIY's on it but welding is def not in my wheelhouse.

If you have a welder who can graft in fresh frame rails I am selling these. CA truck. No rust.

If OP doesn't take them I might be interested. Is this compatible with an '03 Xtracab? What's the story on these?

I think the safety caps are a good deal for the less experienced or if your really in a crunch for time.

I have flat stock bent in 3"x5" ( I have a 48"x96" sheet bent) the size of the Tacoma Frame it is cheaper for me to make my own pieces then buy safety caps

I would Pm Tour991 see what with freight these frame rails would cost delivered to you. The freight might be a deal breaker.

If you only want a year or so patch as best you can.

Good Luck No matter what you decide.
