Hey y’all. I was thinking of starting a thread to show my build and to get advice from all of you first gen taco owners. This is my 1999 Toyota Tacoma which is straight up Base 2WD Single Cab 2.4L engine. It’s literally the simplest of the simplest and I love it.

It all started with my beloved 98 Tacoma that was a 5 Speed Manual 2.4L Access Cab SR5. But I crashed that one :( Here are some pics... Basically I was going down an a highway when a lot of cars swerved in front of me. I started pulling to the side when someone hit me from the back. Then I lost control and hit the person in the front. Finally the back person dipped and insurance wasn't able to help me with this truck. I still have it and I hope to fix it soon. It just needs some body work and replace the rack and pinion.

Flash forwards to a year and I bought a red 1999 Toyota Tacoma. Funny thing about this one, brakes didn't work, it overheated, ran without belts, and it had no coolant lol. This person was a mechanic too so I don't know why he didn't replace or fix these problems. He mainly used it to ship engines though so he barely used it. He was going to charge $3,000 but I brought it down to $2,150 due to all of these issues. Twas a great deal lol (and at 94,500 miles). So then I started doing my own things on it. I changed the oil and filter, added coolant, replaced all three belts, changed engine filter, accidentally broke the plastic rims, added a radio, JBL speakers, a subwoofer, and started too sand it down since the clear coat was basically off.

Then..... I got it painted! I took the rims from the 98 model and put it on mine! I got the bumper kind of fixed, and the right fender got adjusted. I went with just paint for now without fixing any dents. Later I might get it repainted fixing all the dents and get new bumpers because mine are all bent up. I fixed the brakes by replacing the master brake cylinder. Thankfully, the crashed one had a brand new one so I used that one. I then proceeded to have a photoshoot with a camera lmao.

In over 54 years of owning, fixing and rebuilding cars, my 2000 Tacoma base model ( purchased 8 years ago @ 100,000 with all original parts ) has tied for the most trouble free vehicle I’ve ever owned.

The only other vehicles that were just as reliable were my 240/300 Mercedes diesels.

Nice truck, I love my single cab too. Easiest vehicle to park that I've owned.

For the washer fluid, you've probably done this but check all of the lines. Mine were all chewed up when I picked it up.

For the window washer it may the pump for the washer fluid reservoir, or your lines for the washers have disconnected/clogged up/pinched.

On the bottom of your washer reservoir is a pump that a electrical cable connects to. Make sure that's connected, and follow the washer lines to see if there are any problems. You can disconnect the line just to see if the pump is working by activating the washer switch and seeing if water will come out at all (actually it will drizzle water I believe, but when you activate the switch it will shoot the water out). If nothing comes out then the pump is dead and you can get a replacement at a junk yard or order online for actually quite cheap.

If the pump does work and its a problem in the lines somewhere then you'll just have to go through figuring it out. Could be a line that got crimped up when the hoods is down because it got loose, or its got chewed up by rats, or clogged by something. Can try replacing the hoses pretty easily just go to autozone with a sample of the hose and they should be able to match it.
