So my 99 civic is shifting at high rpms. It varies from 3500 to 4300 rpms, sometimes will shift and jerk, and other times it shifts somewhat smooth. Aside from the obvious answer that most likely my tranny is going bad, is there anything else I should check or find out?

Fluid level is fine as I checked that

Also car is automatic with 173k.

More likely than not a transmission? no?

If it's shifting fine occasionally I think you should wait for someone with real automotive experience before you stoop to taking advice regarding possible transmission issues from me. PS - How's the fluid level?

By shifting fine, I just meant that it doesn't jerk when it shifts every gear. It does, however, rev up to atleast 3500 rpm before shifting, and most times its more than that.

Sounds like the transmission needs to be flushed and or serviced.. they dont last forever and if you shift it like a stick always swapping gears instead of letting the auto work its gonna die early.

make sure you use genuine honda trans fluid. I've done trans services on hondas with similar symptoms and the hard shifting would go away when using honda trans fluid.

ok cool, so you think I should just have trans flushed before trying anything else? And that could be causing it to shift at the higher rpms?

You probably don't really need a flush, but if you feel better about it go ahead. You could save a couple bucks and just drain and refill with honda fluid

    Intake, exhaust, lift. Typical stuff.
    Never flush your transmission!

Flush the tranny and use honda tranny fluid, see if it gets you anywhere.

with that many miles on an auto tranny you definitely DO NOT want to flush it. bad things will happen. also, ditto on the honda auto tranny fluid.

Ok, so by draining and refill, is the general consensus I will need about 3 qts? And also, where is the drain plug on it?

You use a 3/8 ratchet to remove the drain plug. I believe the fill is a either a 17 or 14mm. both are on the pass side of the tranny.

So I drained and changed the fluids in the vehicle today. I will say that I noticed the vehicle isn't shifting at as high rpm wise any more. However, two things are still occurring.

When the vehicle is in park and idling, it idles at 900 rpms (Is that normal?)

With a steady foot on the pedal at 55-60mph the rpms are at 2500, which seems a bit high to me

Lastly, when the vehicle shifts, there is slight delay between gears, and then at times it will shift and kind of push you forward in your seat. Its not as if its shifting extremely hard, but every now and then it'll kind of jolt you forward, although jolt seems like a strong word as it isn't that dramatic...

Having said that, the drain and fill did seem to help somewhat, but due to the above statements, is it possible the trans is going bad? Or maybe a selonoid?
