Hi, im about to go look at a 99 tacoma ext cab with a 4 cyl engine, im assuming its a 2.4 but not sure, its a automatic sr5 with 195k on it. My question is what maintenance will I need to do when I get this truck? This guy told me nothing has been done to it other than oil changes since it had 95k on it! I wanna go ahead and get it up to date so I dont have to worry about it for a while. This is the list I have made so far, please correct me or add to it:

    spark plugs
    fuel filter
    oil and filter
    drain and fill tranny fluid
    water pump

and lots of need be's that wont be forseen until I check the truck out like:
    coolant flush
    brakes
    stuff like that.

    any info would be great!

If its 4x4 its 2.7. Id do wires with the plugs, and ive drained refilled my trans 2 times now and its not 100% cherry red (was dark). Going to drop the pan this 3rd time and change filter then fill it up for good.

Id change the diff(f/r/tcase) with synthetic fluid

    grease the shaft lol

TIMING *****CHAIN****--Ask when it was changed. Normally 120K is max.
    If belt--ask when.

its not a 4x4 so its a 2.4L. why would you change the entire distributor? couldnt I just change the cap and rotor? and the actual timing chain needs to be changed? even though its a chain? i thought those things lasted forever

    If it's a pre runner it's a 2.7 as well. 5 lug = 2.4 6 lug = 2.7

Curious why you listed water pump? Also curious about the distributor and cap.

Like everyone else said. Plugs, wires, air filter, oil change, full transmission service since it's an auto, transfer case fluid, rear diff, grease ujoints and other fittings.

Pretty sure the timing chain is a change when it breaks type of thing, unlike the timing belt.

Someone else said something about changing the distributor. I said the water pump because I want to go ahead and do it now before it fails. I'm basically trying to set this truck up to go another 100k without any major maintenance. So I'm getting a list together of preventive maintenance I do on it all at the same time

    It's a 2.4 no pre runner

Forgot to add flush the radiator too. Lots of people neglect that, and it can lead to tons of problems.

Timing chains on the 2RZ 2.4 and the 3RZ 2.7 are lifetime parts.
They do not fall in any maintenance schedule.

A 99 will have coil packs and wires. Replace the wires.
The coil packs only need to be changed if they are suspect of a failure.

One of the biggest things I push is the valve shim adjustment.
The 2RZ and 3RZ engines have a history of the exhaust valves getting too tight and either burning a valve or cracking a head. That gets expensive.
Most mechanics will tell you to leave them alone, but don't listen to them.
OE recommends a valve adjustment every 60K.
    Read here: http://www.yotatech.com/f128/5vz-fe-3rz-fe-2rz-fe-valve-adjustment-tech-226997/

    That's really about it.
The standard maintenance things are the only other things you should worry about.

Also, if you're not sure about what's on a specific year model, you shouldn't post what you think needs to happen.

I have a 2000 tacoma 2.7 and my toyota 4wheel drive shop told me they never need to change timing chain

Alcan stock height 4-leaf springs, greaseable main eye bolts, OME greaseable shackles, all energy suspension bushings, 2-row extra deep radiator, KYB gas-a-just shocks. ALL LED exterior and interior lighting including custom tail lights and blinkers.
    Don't forget the PCV valve.

The timing chains last a long time. Mine had little wear on the guides after 160k.

Just look into it and change it if you decide to do any other maintenance.

Good information but no need for the j**ka** comment at the end. I was simply stating what most cars/ trucks would need in a typical routine tune up. Just wasn't sure about the 4 cyl engines on these trucks. As you can see, I did own a 3.4 a time ago and I'm pretty familiar with them. Again, thanks for the input, good info, but save the jerkish comments.

Yes the chain itself is lifetime--the tensioner and associated components usually need to be replaced about 125K.
You can HEAR the chain rattle at start up.
If left unchecked -it can wear thru the housing.

honestly, bring it to a shop before you buy it to have them look it over and give you an estimate of what may need to be done...the previously mentioned things as well as the possibility of suspension, front end stuff, exhaust stuff,.... pay the fee and have it checked out. this also gives you some bargaining power

    but that's just me

Oh ok I dont hear any chain rattle at start up and I have 270,000 kms on the truck. Now I just have to worry about the valves cracking my head lol because damn that looks like a expensive job to check the damn things. which I am not looking to forward to letting go of more hundreds on this damn thing lol
