    Hey Guys.

I am looking to get a new engine in my 99 tacoma. it has 305k miles on it. I bought it about a week ago, owner said he replaced the engine 30k miles ago but there is practically no compression in cylinder 3. I am looking at getting a new engine just to know that it will last me for another 200k miles or whatever but I am stumped at where to even start looking for one.

Anyone have any recommendations? I would love one with a warranty just to know it will last me for a bit. I live in southern California.

All kinds 3 inch body lift/2 1/2 suspension lift. 31/11 1/2/15 tires All work done by myself for years. The only work performed by mechanic was fuel pumps. I also have a 90 Mustang 350 hp and I can never understand how come my Tacoma gets more respect Just got a 99 Jeep TJ that I rebuilt, and painted in the garage
I hate to rub it in but you bought a dog?? It all depends on what kind of money you want to spend, and what your capable of doing yourself. I bought a dog Jeep and just went thru what your doing. I ended up selling it at a three thousand dollar loss. I didnt have the time, but I would have bought a rebuild. Toyota is expensive though

I believe this wasn’t a mistake buying the truck. I bought it for 4.5k, body is perfect, interior is all reupholstered leather. I am going to do the engine install myself, me and my brother have the time / ability to do it. Just looking for advice on where / how much I should expect / look out for. Once the engine is running good, it will be a great truck but the engine is just holding it back currently

Yota1 is the way if you can stomach a 5-6 month lead time

Sorry to hear you got ripped off. That's what it sounds like . I'd take that bum to small claims court if you have any documention ie; listing of vehicle on Truck Trader / Craigs List etc and / or said statements of recent engine rebuild in front of witnesses .
A lot of times bums like that will offer a partial refund when pressed than take their chances in front of a judge .
    Best of luck friend .

I live in Socal also and I had my motor rebuilt last year. It was not a quick or cheap process. I was expecting a $4,000ish repair build and by the time it was over, it was close to $7300. The 3rz is not a motor many shops want to work on, and even JDM motors in questionable condition cost over $2500.

You will save money pulling the motor yourself and taking it to a machine shop, but most places I called only offer a 1 year warranty.

By the time you are done, you could have just got a great running first gen without the wasted time and effort.

I looked and E Bay had some rebuilds at $3500. If your doing it yourself its not terrible

Somebody suggested powertrain products on another thread. Around $4,000.
