    I have a fully stock 96 Tacoma 4 cylinder 4wd
I haven't done any off roading in it but I am curious how is the off road capability can it handle rugged terrain relatively well? And mud ECT. Is it worth modifying for off road or would I be better off with something with a V6 or V8?
    Any info is much appreciated!

One of the best in the world.

Small wheel base, loads of reliability, lots of standard ground clearance.

Honestly, even with basic tires, go find a logging road and explore, you'll learn more about the truck, go from there!

If you're worried about bogging out offroading, don't. It has 4lo, which provides more torque on challenges, and helps with hill climbing and descending.

While Tacomas aren't known for exceptional luxury, acceleration or great gas mileage they are rugged, reliable and capable off road.

The biggest advantage you have is that the thing doesn’t weigh much. Put some decent tires on it and Don’t overburden it with a bunch of extra crap and it’ll take you just about anywhere you want to go.

Engine size and configuration isn't nearly as important as the driver choosing a good line, your tires and your suspension when it comes to driving off road. Go take it out on some dirt roads and see how she does! And welcome to the world!

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
Then how you define offroading comes into play!!

It can mean so many different types of terrain !

Never go alone if possible always tell someone about where your going and when you plan to return.

The goodies you carry in the truck can make the difference between a miserable night out and being some what comfortable.

I suggest taking it off road and see for yourself.

If you're a novice off-roader, I guarantee it is more capable off road than you are.

4cyl, V6, V8, V10, turbine, doesn't matter. It's all about gearing and driving skill. Those comp rock crawler buggies usually run tiny little 4cyl with ultra low gearing. Bigger more powerful engines in stock vehicles just mean you're more likely to break something. With the 4cyls, as long as you aren't loading them down with a whole ton of gear, they're great. So unless you're planning on tractor pulls and mud bogs, a toyota 4cyl is more than adequate.

That said, all you'll need is a decent set of all terrain tires (stock size is fine), a recovery gear set (tow straps, shovel, off-road jack, etc...), a good first aid kit, and some friends to go driving with. Ideally, you'd find a group or at least a person with more experience than you to go with. 4x4 clubs are great for that.

Go out, have fun, test your skills within a reasonable safety limit. If the trail gets too hard, you can always turn back. No shame is saving yourself and your truck for another day.
