Just out of curiosity, if Toyota made a few hundred replica’s of a 1980 Tacoma, who’d consider buying one?

I only bring it up due to the fact they are no longer making Reg cabs anymore. I know I would absolutely jump on it. Old replica body with today’s 4 cylinder engine technology. I think they would all sell in a short period of time.

That would be insanely awesome! Modern features and technology, but old school styling.

Unfortunately I'd think it would be near impossible to incorporate all of the modern safety features and emissions stuff and things necessary for vehicles to be sold today into that truck :pout:

FWIW, Toyota started making the Tacoma in 1995. Before that it was just called the Toyota Pick-Up, or the Hilux internationally.

I'd do it.! I remember when those trucks were around.

It would have to be under $30k though LOL.

I think Toyota adopted the SR5 on the truck in the early 80’s. Stands for Sport Rally 5-Speed. Funny how you can get an SR5 today in a V6. Technically it should be an SR6. Not sure why they never changed that.

I'd really want one too, but I'd want it the size they were... not bigger and bloated like today's cars.

But that leaves me with the question of how they would cram modern airbags, safety systems and crumple zones into such a small truck... 1st gens had airbags, but now with all these mandatory curtain airbags, door airbags, groin airbags, roof airbags and whatever.. I don't know how it could fit

The same way they did the 1st gen’s that ran up until 2004. The Taco didn’t get fat until the 2nd gen in 2005.

I'd buy that truck in a split second! I think the Tacoma is too big, but this being murica bigger is always better, meh.

yeah, that would be the best. It's a shame the compact truck is dead, though, because their small size is what made them fun. I hope they come back, one day....
But making them bigger makes it easier to go around strict pollution and emissions laws. It's cheaper and easier for manufacturers to make them bigger than invest in R&D for smaller and more efficient engines...

Yes, but we can dream. I think this is a replica that would sell out quick if they made them. Hell, I KNOW they would sell all of them in less than a week.

That would be really cool. Or a retro rig of some sort. Jeep and chevy made one for the Sema show I was at this year. The Toyota booth was so disappointing. They had 5 or 6 Camrys sitting there The worst I had seen.

See! That’s cool! If Chevy, Ford or any other of these companies did it, they would sell. No R&D to do, just make the old shells, put in current engines etc...

Honestly, what I'd want more than a the old school Pickup would be for Toyota to figure out a way to sell the 70 series Landcruisers and Troopies here... with the freakin' diesel option though!

And then... get a nice regular cab 80's styled pickup with a turbo'd 22RE.

I guess technically I could have all these things if I were made of money...

This land cruiser at the show had all 4 runner running gear, drive train, engine and disc brakes. Check out the 4.0 in there. I wish I would have taken more pics. They specialize in making FJ cruisers made to order but the price was outrageous. Very impressive though.

I like this idea. I would be in for sure.

This proposed idea is exactly what Ford did with the GT40 back in 2004 with the Ford GT. They took the original exterior design and dimensions and crammed all the current technology into it.
