Just got a call from the dealership and they said the 17x8 4.25bs rims I bought (for winters) won't clear the caliper. Can this be possible? I thought only the 16s had problems?

Does anyone know this? Or should I just go punch them in the ear for being wrong?

Ideally you would want a 4.5bs. Maybe 4.25bs has something to do with it? :notsure:

Not a pro, but I think it's possible. BS may have nothing to do with it, it's the distance from the mounting surface (hub) to the spokes or whatever you want to call it. Usually arched, so as to clear the calipers.
    Measurements A, B and C below are a must.

Offset would will help, but also the shape of the spoke surface ( from the inside). I would always check with the wheel maker for fitment before buying or try them if used. A local shop tried to sell me a set for the Tacoma, said they were a fit. I e-mailed Ultra Wheels and they warned me that that set would not clear the caliper. Some people may grind their caliper, but I sure don't recommend it, onced grinded the walls containing the brake fluid could start leaking under pessure.

Acadian is right. The 52 and 98 series will not fit without spacers. The backsides of the "spokes" are flared and contact the caliper. I had the same problem on my 85 4runner with late model calipers, fixed it with 1" spacers.

If you cannot return the wheels, run the smallest spacer possible to avoid tire contact with the wheel well and frame. There are 1/4" spacers available but they only slide over the lugs. I don't know if they would be a good idea (not enough threads on the lugs?) and they might not even be enough to clear. Bora makes a 3/4" spacer.

I went with 1" because they were easy to get and I don't mind the extra width.

edit: This fella is running 1.25 spacers with his 52 series, but I'm not sure of the backspacing on his. You want to be careful not to push the wheels out too far.

I will probably go with the 1" once I find out where to buy them. I wanted my 285s to stick out a bit more then the 17X8 4.5 bs rim I have anyways so I'm all good with it. Where do you make them and is there anything I need to know about putting 1" ones on?

You should probably be prepared to do some cutting. 285's on wheels with effectively 3.25" backspacing are more then likely going to rub a lot.

Without running spacers/adapters, the only steel wheels that I know of that will clear the calipers are Wheeler's steel wheels. Did you check them out?

The viewing angle of the CAD design/drawing does make it a bit misleading. Here's a better picture of how it would look when mounting different offsets....

Vin is correct. It is well documented on here by trial and error than no steel wheels fit 2nd gens except for Wheelers.
