I've been checking out a few Tacos & found a 07 double cab with the long bed. I love the truck, but it has 175,000 miles & i'm worried that's too much. I'm hoping to have w.e truck I buy for atleast the next 10 years. And I would be happy if it could go atleast another 50,000 miles with no maintenance required. What maintenance should I expect with mileage that high? What are some things to look for so I know if it's a good buy or not? The frame was recalled & replaced so it is literally brand new.

If maintenance is done well, 175K isn't anything on these. I have seen 400-500K miles.

& i'm also looking at a 2008 Taco Crew Cab with the Short Bed & 104,000 miles for about $3,500 more than the 2007 with 175,000. It seems like a lot of people aren't too fond of the short bed, so it's deterred me from them, but i found a better deal on the short bed. Any suggestions?

What maintenance has been done is the question. If to the specified schedule then I think your good to go. If neglected then it's a crap shoot.

It also has a tow brake installed & the dealer doesn't know what it was used to tow. Should that be of any concern? There aren't really any service records to know what kind of maintenance has been done to the car. I attached a file of the only records showing up on mycarfax. Looks like the steering gear & blower motor was repaired/replaced in 2007. I'm not sure how serious that is?

    a bunch of new/used parts....and some skids.
Bought my truck with 135k and a new frame. I thought it was a great buy, but then I found a few lingering issues that I had to fix. Intermediate steering shaft, serp belt and idlers, front bearings, brake calipers seizing.
A few other small things. Nothing huge, but a far cry from trouble free since purchasing.

I'd say ask how long the truck Sat on the lot while the frame was ordered/shipped.

"Steering gear" sounds like the intermediate shaft to me.

The truck also has a pretty nice bed topper. Here's a few pics. You can see the tow brake in one of the pics.

That mileage is not a problem for a well-maintained Tacoma. Take a good look underneath though. There's lots of stories about frame rust on these trucks.

If the truck was properly maintained you should not have a problem as far as the drive train goes. You make have other issues with suspension, wheel bearings and the such but that's expected for any vehicle with that mileage. If you pull the trigger and decide to buy I would change all of the fluids, filters and maybe the spark plugs.

Of course I bought mine new and that helps my confidence. In May we drove my 07 on a 4700 mile road trip from GA to the Grand Canyon and up into Utah before returning home. I had 165,000 on it when we left. It has 175,000 on it right now and I'd get in it today for the same trip. I expect to get at least another 100,000 miles before any major issues.

But at the same time the price should reflect 175,000 miles. I've done virtually nothing other than replace brakes, shocks, tires, plugs, battery and fluids. I did have to replace 1 U-Joint and the HVAC fan motor. My rear springs are due to be replaced under the recall. I figure it is about time for some small stuff to start wearing out.

If it was well maintained, it's just broken in..... problem is with used, it's a crapshoot.

I bought my truck with 23 miles on it, and I expect to drive it til it dies. As with all vehicles, there are always some minor issues ( had the a/c blower replaced due to squeaking, and a wheel bearing replaced - under warranty) but I've only done the common maintainence items, and my truck runs like new at 52k mi.

I'd say to buy a truck with 135k miles and expect it to be trouble free might be a stretch. Good condition, yes. Well maintained, yes. You are going to have things break, no way to avoid that. But with good care they should be relatively minor things that can often be taken care of by the owner.

Contrast that with my experience as a BMW tech...you see one of those with 135k miles come in and every light in the dash is on, all kinds of rattles, etc. They aren't built to last. Heck, I put an engine in a 1-series with less than 500 miles in it. I was driving a new X3 in to the shop for an oil change and it just died. Pushed it in, checked faults, nothing. Checked things for an hour, no reason it died. Wouldn't start back up. Got the shop foreman, he couldn't figure it out. Did a battery reset and it starts. Still no faults. Just stupid stuff. It's stuff like that you won't have to worry about. But Tacomas are still made of mechanical parts that wear out and break. Just have realistic expectations.

    Little bit of stuff.
Pssshhhh, she's just barely broken in. So long as the proper maintenance has been performed, that truck will see quite a few more miles. I bought mine with 220k and its the best investment I've made so far, aside from dating a chef.

I traded my '06 at 175,000 and I was very much on top of the maintenance. Per my dealer, he starts to see maintenance starting to ramp up at 175,000. I can say however that when I traded it in, it was tight, rattle free, and ran as good as it did the day that I bought it with 4K on the clock.

Leap forward 2 owners since me and a current total of 206,000 miles, the rear TSB springs just broke and were replaced, the frame was just replaced, the AC compressor was just replaced, the steering rack was just replaced, the upper ball joints were just replaced, and the water pump and idlers were just replaced. The truck is now probably good for another 100k. So to answer your question, IMO you might get another 25k with no issues and you may have some repairs on the horizon depending on what was and wasn't already done to it. Trouble free for another 50k, maybe not. I'm with the other poster suggesting looking for a truck with 135k.
