This truck takes synthetic. I don't know what the prices are in Canada for Synthetic. But here in the USA, it usually costs twice as much as a tank of gas.

    me.

    or about every 10k miles.

don't see any reason why not.

base design versions of this 3.5L engine are running fine well into 200k miles and many are in cars where folks don't do anything unless a dash light tells them.

Do what you wish, I´m sure the engineers who built and tested the engine and oil life don´t know what they are talking about.

I will follow the 16k on this truck but I'm not keeping it forever.

Usually I do an oil change with the winter tire swap, so 2 a year, I average 14000kms/year. So 7000km with synthetic if required.

I'd say with synthetic there's a long debate, but changing it early is a waste, its designed to last longer and release additives over time.

Toyota hasn't used 5000 km oil change intervals since the early 90's. Just sayin.

Welcome! I am 47 and have been using Internet Forums since the days of FIDONET (FIGHT O NET). Common mistake is to ask a question that has already been asked, answered, debated to death. The best thing you can ever EVER do is look up on the upper left of the home screen and see SEARCH then use basic not too wordy searches "OIL CHANGE" and then select either the whole forum or a specific subforum. Then if you don't come up with anything... write a post. If you do find something and the thread still does not answer your question, you can add to that thread or start a new one.

Oh and if you don't have a little bit of thick skin some people will be downright rude. I haven't seen that on this forum... well at least not at someone who wasn't rude first.

I use to spend more on slop, er I mean Budweiser, wine, so a once a year oil change is a drop in the bucket compared to the money I use to spend on booze. Dealer told me once a year because I'll be lucky to put 3,000 miles a year on my truck. I would like to wait till 5,000 miles but I would go through several winters and summers. I have been told that is not good on an engine anyhow..

I've spent the last 15+ years in BMW's and their service interval is 15K for Oil Changes. Recent X3 was solid with no issues.

Don't worry about it and welcome. There's an ignore button somewhere for AHs! lolo!

I’ll be changing mine @7-8k or every six months which ever comes first, to get contaminants out my crankcase and get less friction, better gas mileage.
But the gas mileage alone won’t ever pay off or make it worth while. But less friction will give me an extra margin of safety.
You can easily and safely get 10k with synthetic with no notable issues.
Many years ago, in the 70’s-80’s the synthetic oil companies ran tests in which they ran state police cruisers with intervals of 20k oil changes and found no appreciable wear & tear on those engines when they tore them down after 200k for test results, so which ever you choose to do will work fine, you’re in the driver’s seat.
    Hope that helps
    Cheers!

I talked to my mechanic friends about this one night when we were hanging out. They all said the same including all their instructors from when they were in school. Oil may have gotten better but the filters haven't changed much. So ya your oil might be good for 16 000km but who knows if the filter really is.

Regardless considering changing the oil is one of the easiest things to do and best thing for your engine, I'll be doing mine every 8000-10 000KM.

5000km is a waste of money. Use a good filter and good oil and you will be fine.

    Read www.bobistheoilguy.com

Spend the $ to have your oil properly tested one time. Follow the lab recommendations for your motor.

Do the above only if you really care about being both efficient and protective.

Other wise change early and be wasteful, change late and be harmful. Old wives tales, past experience, mechanics school (for the most part), what daddy did, what Jr did, none of it is as accurate as what a tribologist will demonstrate in a lab for your specific motor needs, based on a test of your used oil.

OEs make recommendations. They are very conservative. Warranty, reputation, and all that. So at the minimum follow those recommendations and you will be 'safe'.

If you ask the dealership they say every 10k change the oil while using full synthetic, the maintenance light comes on every 5k to rotate tires and top off fluids and any other required maintenance. How ever the owners manual says to change oil every 5k the dealer ship says those are non synthetic guild lines.
