Do you all think that the dealerships do everything required for the 15,000 Mile Service, or do they just do an oil change?

I just took my Tacoma in for the 15,000 mile service, and they printed out 10000 Mile Maint. Syn. But above that it says I scheduled the 15,000 mile service online on 7-1-14. So I guess I'm covered if they try to get over...

I don't trust the dealer with anything. The dealership we use is nice and we have a good relationship with our salesman but the service sucks. We have had the "free" maintenance program on all our vehicles bought in the last few years but I refuse to take it to them. When I had my 2011 I took it in twice for the "free" oil change, tire rotation, etc... and each time they didn't rotate the tires. I marked the tires with chalk just to see. On the sheet printed out it listed all the things that they did to the truck (including tire rotation). I asked the service adviser if they rotated the tires and he said yes. I then showed him where I had marked the tires and told him that they didn't. This happened twice mind you. He said they must have forgot to rotate them. I asked him "did they forget to change the oil and filter too?".

From that point on I do all my own maintenance on my vehicles. I buy all the parts from Toyota and keep the receipts and take pictures of what is being done and when it took place. I have a folder with all that information in it. I realize that sounds anal but free isn't free when they don't do the things they are supposed to do.

I took advantage of free dealer maintenance all the way to the 20k visit. Crawled under the truck after 20k and realized the drive shaft was never greased. The zerks still had protective coating on them and the rears were pretty dry. I thought that was part of the maintenance schedule? I doubt they did anything but oil, filter, and tire rotation. I do my own maintenance now.

This is what I'm afraid of... I'm going there with a flashlight to inspect everything.

I crawled under the truck right in front of the service department. Of course the U joints weren't greased. Made them take it back and do what I paid for. Unreal...

What do I need to do this myself? An average grease gun? And what type of grease? Thanks.

For those that have not read the terms of the " Free Service " that is provided:

    • Inspect and adjust all fluid levels
    • Replace engine oil and oil filter [4]
    • Rotate tires
    • Multi-point vehicle inspection
[3] Excludes those items listed in the Warranty and Maintenance Guide under Special Operating Conditions.

[4] Engine oil may include 0w20 synthetic oil, depending on vehicle model and model year.

I'm not 100% sure they ever did any of those things the 2 times I took mine in.

Just saying that is what they are required to do. Verification is on the owner.

I am sure they did those to mine. I watched every step.

Yeah... It's a shame what they are required to do and what they actually do are seldom the same. At least in my case.

Yeah... That way I can show that all the maintenance was done and the camera time / date stamps everything. I realize that sounds OCD (and I suppose it is) but I'm sure the next owner would feel a little more at ease knowing the vehicle had been serviced the way it was supposed to. That said, nothing will be recorded with Toyota (other than receipts) so it's kind of a catch 22 situation.

Like stated above the only thing they do on the free service is tire rotation and oil / filter change.

Save yourself the hassle. Get under your truck and do the oil yourself, do the zerks while your at it and get to know your truck.

Also do yourself and your rear diff a favor.... grab 3 quarts of proper rear diff oil, and change your rear diff fluid.... did mine at 6k and it was NASTY from all the break in.

I let them (the dealer) do an oil change once at 5k miles as i had the truck there for the drive shaft vibration tsb. I stood by my truck the entire time as i had to correct the service supervisor taking measurements for the TSB (as he had no clue what he was doing or how to use an angle finder), and i was glad i did, as the oil change boy drained my oil, put the plug back in lowered the truck and just about start it without oil in it. At that point I ripped them both a new asshole... and after that TSB was completed i have yet to set foot back in the dealer.

They rotated my tires and changed my oil and that is it. 2nd tire rotation they dropped PSI to 32. Door sticker says 46. I was pissed when I got home and had to get air compressor out. If there is 46 in all 4 tires don't you think that you would think twice before airing down and look at door jamb? Now I noticed that they over tightened one of the valve stem caps and broke the end off it.

Sorry but I don't see how it's on the owner to verify these things are done. You take your car to the dealership for service presumably because you don't know how to service your vehicle. Are you telling me they expect soccer moms to get under their vehicles and inspect things after service? Come on!

It might be in print somewhere that its on the owner, but I bet that wouldn't hold up in court.
