Can anyone tell me if the 2.5 inch diameter and 10 inch long Widowmaker sounds with a deep growl at idle on the 3rd gen taco and if it similar in sound to the Carven, MBRP or Flow master single side exit catback exhaust? Thinking of just replacing the stock muffler while keeping the stock piping. Widowmaker folks claim it has a deep growl and does not have a drone at cruising speed. Great if you have any sound clip to share.

I’m sure it would make it louder, most likely will drone.

Have you heard why these minivan motors sound like? It’s not exactly attractive.

Looks like the Black Widow exhaust website has sound clips. They only have the 4.0L Tacoma, but i can't imagine a 3.5L would be much different.

Having had both motors I can tell you that the 4.0 definitely has a better idle sound than the 3.5. They will both be raspy on the top end. Its really up to you if you want a louder truck. You will probably really like it at first and then it will bug you on long road trips. Always seems to be the case for me.

I think if I really had time/money/willingness the best way to go is to wire up an exhaust valve that can open when you feel like being loud like the mustang bros.

Mahalo for the feedback. I currently running a Borla S- type catback but no satisfied at idle. It's too quiet. I want a louder rumble at idle and I was told this widowmaker will provide me the sound I'm looking for.

There is no muffler on the market from anyone that will make a v6 rumble. They will get loud, sound like a fart can rice burner and that is all. If you like the sound of those, great. But, there is only one way to rumble, and that is still with a good old fashioned V8.

If you’re looking for simply loudness then you will get that with that muffler. It just sounds like a loud 6 cylinder. You’ll never get that powerful throaty V8 sound. Personal opinion loud 4 and 6 cylinder just sound cheap and obnoxious. It’s kind of like look at me, look at me my vehicle sure is loud. And they do sound like a fart machine.

I've heard adding one of these style mufflers BEFORE the stock muffler can make the exhaust sound deeper. Never heard someone verify it with the 3.5 though.
Apparently it helps filter out the higher pitch noises. I haven't ever tried it either, I wouldn't want a louder exhaust personally, just a better sounding one.

Okay mahalo everyone for your input. The widowmaker muffler is arriving today. Only will find out if I personally like it after having it installed. I will still keep the borla and when I get tired of the widowmaker, I still have borla to put back in. :fingerscrossed:

+1 to this! IMO a V6 just sounds like ass.

SOURCE: I live in SoCal where there are fart cans aplenty, and to me the more obnoxious ones are the 6 cylinder variety.

I also have Flowmasters on my V8 Mustang so I can comment on what a "rumble" exhaust should sound like.

I had an MBRP that definitely had some rumble. I'll see if I can find it.

How about good night, I am also looking to change the exhaust of the Tacoma 3rd generation but I am not familiar with this and I do not know whether to change only the original silencer or change the complete pipe since they tell me with the MBRP it improves not only the sound, if not also the performance and power of the truck and I would really like that but I don't need the super noise either because I travel in the city and excessive noise is prohibited here, can you recommend something to ... thank you very much!!

You need a tune or re-gear. I absolutely love my Stromung, everyone who hears it thinks it’s throaty and the high clearance it gives me is killer! Ymmv

Skip to 0:40 for the part about dressing up and being as loud as possible.
