Hey y'all, I'm not here to start an argument about why I should get an AAL vs a block. I installed 5100's set at 1.75 to the front of my 2013 DCSB but now I am half an inch taller in the front. I would rather be half an inch taller in the rear rather than being a full one inch rake (Hence why I am not getting an AAL because they don't make 1 inch AAL's). I have the 3+1 leafs on my truck. I'm not going one inch so I believe I will be okay in the aspect of axle wrap.

Anyways, I would like to know if anyone has recommendations on their rear blocks. I'll probably need new ubolts, so if anyone has any good or bad information please let me know. They have a couple brands on Amazon that are $60 for the kit or should I spend a few more dollars and get a Pro Comp kit for $90? Aren't blocks just blocks? As long as I stay away from aluminum and get steel correct?

If you knew how bad axle wrap was with the stock leafs without any blocks.... you would never consider putting a block on em.

IIRC there's something about the shape of the blocks too. Like being beveled on the sides. Hopefully someone can chime in for specifics.

Forgot to mention, no serious offroading will be done in this truck. The most off road it'll see is flat grass and dirt. I see that Heavy Metal has blocks that are tapered. Do I want tapered?

Even if no serious off roading, axle wrap is probably worst on the street where you have maximum traction. Stock leafs, you are looking at a pinion that moves up and down probably 4-5inches....

is axle wrap a concern 100% of the time or just during strong accelerations?

Acceleration, deceleration mainly... doesnt even have to be a spirited get up and go... pop a gopro underneath the truck and go for a drive.

Keep the blocks under 1.5 inches and drive like a human. I would recommend tapered blocks. There is no real issue with aluminum. Get a solid block, machined (hollow) blocks can crack. However, cracking is usually an issue with taller blocks.

Yes, you will probably need longer U-bolts.

    Too few to list.
Hmm... I'd rather mess with the front than the rear. I suggest dropping to .85" in the front and use 1/4 spacers for a .5" lift (1.35" total).

Well considering I don't have axle wrap with my stock leaves, anyone that has had or currently have blocks have any opinions on the matter?

Put the 1” tapered block in the rear, you’ll be fine, don’t listen to all these guys that pitch a fucking fit anytime they hear the word block. If it’s your daily street truck and you aren’t a hardcore off-road guy you’ll have no issues.

No way the pinion at the 3rd member is moving 5” with stock springs on the street, that would be like a 30 plus degree change. If actually moved that much I assure u joints would bind or break.

I don't think there should be much concern with axle wrap with a one-inch block lift. Primary cause of axle wrap is hard acceleration (race cars) and high torque set-ups (diesel engines). I have 200K + miles with my one-inch block setup with no issues, and on OEM leaf springs (I do have the Firestone air bags). I'm using MaxTrac #810010 cast iron blocks. Got the u-bolts from Wheeler's Off Road; their pricing on u-bolts when I got them were the most competitive. I also didn't get the extended brake lines. I did get a spacer for my carrier bearing bracket. I off-road, mostly in the dez, and occasionally will tow a rental trailer. Blocks would not be recommended if you are putting a lot of weight in the bed; otherwise, you will be fine.

Get a solid block, if you can get something slightly tapered that would contribute to ensuring you don't get vibes, which you likely won't anyway. you can always get a separate shim after if you need it. for example i used a 3 degree shim with my aal that says 1.5 inches, worked out great. my 2018 came with a smaller shim from the factory, maybe somebody has a take off you could install with your block and be all done. i already gave my stock shims away..

Add the AAL, it will settle. Screw blocks.
