    G'Day!

Just took my 65k in for an oil change.

While checking the fluids, my reservoir had to be topped off.
Splashes indicating a failing water pump and it was suggested to replace before the condition worsens. Average 500 miles a month, mechanic suggested repair before heat of summer, but I'd rather take care of it soon.

Is there anything else I should have them do at the same time? Mechanic indicated the belts looked ok. And what please should changing the pump cost? Should I make sure OEM parts are used? I wish to do it right but have little to no mechanical acumen and my trusted mechanic for many years retired. (present mechanic came recommended, but no personal history until this oil change).

    Appreciate your guidance and expertise.
    Thank you in advance!

Location can effect labor rates they can vary quite much.

Have you been quoted a price?? I would go with Napa parts Toyota List water pump$123.10 it is your decision.

Parts plus Coolant plus labor will add up fast.

Have your radiator hoses every been changed??

If you were close I would be glad to change the water pump. Any friends that could help you.

Aisin water pump from Rockauto for $50 is oem. It’ll probably even come with the Toyota stamp grinded off, mind did. Replaced the the pump on my 2.7 it’s pretty simple takes about an hour or 2 depending if you’ve done it before, also replace the fan clutch with an aisin unit as well while you’re there.

Might as well do hoses and thermostat while in there. Adds up fast and is a fun way to learn your truck!

Thank you for the kind offer, but we are quite aways away from each other. :)
Do not believe the hoses have ever been changed.
I will keep the Napa idea in mind.
He has not supplied a written quote but I did ask and he stated in the $500 range.
I have an appt on the 19th to fix my windshield wiper indicator that will not go off (hoping for a loose connection)
At that appt, I planned on asking for a estimate but hoped to go in better prepared.

Thank you for all the suggestions.
I have purchased a few non mechanical parts off Rockauto, why did they grind the logo off if OEM?
And while while I would love to do the work myself (love to learn about my truck's workings), it would have to be supervised with someone who knows what they are doing... as I do not...

Thank you. I THINK you are sharing to also consider rockauto and choose parts with lifetime warranties?

As far as other parts. If you don't have good maintenance history I'd replace everything touched to get to the water pump.

Why? Because the have to touch them anyway, so the labor is 'free'. Only extra cost would be the parts used.

My guess is because they cannot sell Toyota branded parts even though Aisin and Denso make a lot of the parts for Toyota.

    Water pump: https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=1872336&cc=1357578&pt=2208
    Clutch: https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=1947500&cc=1357578&pt=6812

Like Bill said, I would also have the following replaced since you'll already be in there: belts, thermostat, upper/lower/heater core hoses. Associated gaskets.

If you're located in SC I'll gladly help for some beer and food.

A very good time to meet new Toyota Loving Friends.

The thing with a water pump it can completely fail at any time if it has started leaking out the weep hole.

Then last another 100,000 miles one never knows.

A good Mechanic is so very hard to find . Some can be quite strange where they buy parts.

Some will put a surcharge on customer supplied parts.

    Good luck.

    I might have missed it?
    But what engine?

The 3.4 pump runs off the timing belt.
So I’d do a timing belt kit too.

If it’s the 2.7, a thermostat and possibly hoses.

Good. It should be “cheaper” and easier to replace.

You need one that goes to INCH lbs.
In my experience, you are better off going with a good quality wrench.

However.....your daily driver .......might not want to cut your teeth on that....
