I got the P0171 code, twice now. Air filter is clean. It was recommended to me to clean the MAF sensor. I have the intake off and am about to clean it with CRC MAF cleaner BUT, the back of the can says “DO NOT use on vehicles with a karmen-vortex air flow sensor e.g. some 2006 and older Toyota, Lexus , Mitsubishi vehicles”. I have Stabil car/choke cleaner on hand but was told not to use that by the mechanic that recommended the CRC MAF cleaner. Any recommendations? How do i know if I have a karmen-vortex MAF sensor?
Thanks in advance for any advice or experience's you could share.

Take the one off that you have on your truck. Then Google ‘karmen - vortex MAF sensor. Compare them
Edit - here’s the one that came out of my 04 V6. That’s the cleaner I used too.

I used the CRC on my 01 with the 5VZ, no problems. I think if it's the "hot wire" type of MAF you're good to go.
Make sure there are ZERO air leaks between the MAF and the engine with that code. I have replaced a couple of MAFs on Camry's for that code as well. Toyota gives a voltage spec for the MAF output vs engine speed/load, that's how I determine if its junk.

Yes that is the only code that showed up on the reader, it said:
    P0171
    1)System to lean(A/F lean malfunction Bank 1)
    2)System to lean (Bank1)
    3)System to lean (Fuel Trim)

I think I’m going to try the CRC MAF cleaner as pictured above and see where it gets me.
On visual inspection the hoses do not appear to be leaking but it is 21 year old rubber so who knows. I do know the only reason I needed a new radiator was because the plastic was old and cracked but the fins and all were in impeccable condition with no leaks.

+100 on CRC. I do my MAF and intake with their respective CRC sprays twice a year.

This is the only cleaner I have used on my MAF sensor. Used it several times over the years, no codes, still the original MAF sensor. I would feel comfortable using either product.

Update, after 1000 miles, no code has come back on after cleaning the MAF sensor, knock on wood. Also for future reference here is a diagnosis lookup from a mechanic i know on code PO171. I did find the proper MAF cleaner, the first gen tacomas did not use karmen vortex maf sensors.
