Hello, first time post here. I am replacing the 2 rubber return line hoses. Thr long one out of the reservoir is showing small thin cracks. The short one on the bottom has fluid buildup. I figured I’ll replace both. The one on the bottom is giving troubles coming off. I undid the hose clamps and got it to unseat but can’t get it off. Is cutting the only option? I’m not trying to salvage the hose. I just got afraid that cutting it puts me in a worse position. I added a picture of the short hose.

Does fuel hose work as a good replacement?

Can I use some dish soap to help get the new one on as I fear it will be as challenging to get on as it is to get off.

A pair of wire cutters can be used to weaken the hose. It will slip off easy once it's compromised.

Or slit it with a box cutter.

The hose has deformed and taken the shape of the clamp. A new hose will go on fine, just lube it up with whatever fluid that is. I'm assuming it's tranny/steering fluid

Thank you sir. I cut it and it still required every tool to get off both halves. Hey they lasted 26 years without an issue. I’m happy to get this far. This is ATF. Are O’Reilly P/S hoses? Any suggestions on what ATF to use? I see O’Reilly has Dextron 2/3 for Toyota that is red fluid. Any suggestions on how to do the bleed?

Glad it helped you out, I usually cut them long ways right next to the fitting. It really weakens the hose and they slip right off.

As far as hoses, I'm not sure. I'm pretty sure I used fuel line when I re did mine. They guys behind the counter might be helpful with that. I do know that vacuum line might not be the best option. Also I use ATF dextron 3? Not sure if it's by the book but I've used it for years.

Bleeding, jack up the front end and slowly turn the wheels lock to lock with the engine running. But don't force it to hit the steering stops, which makes the pump whine.

The fluid will probably foam up, recheck it once air bubbles go away. Good luck and congrats on doing it yourself. Welcome to TW.

Copy thank you sir. I read that the ATF is hot so that will eat at fuel line which is meant to be cool so might want to watch out for that. So after I hook up everything, I will fill up the reservoir which will fill up the empty hoses then proceed with jacking up the truck?

Power steering hoses are not user serviceable .......no brainer at 1500+ psi

they come as a complete unit

Duralast Power Steering Pressure Line Hose Assembly 80627

Duralast Power Steering Return Hose 93571

these are gates brand made for autozone.....plug and play for Tacoma's
steer hoses have a special nylon liner

you can jack up the front or put trash bag under each wheel...
and turn the steering full turn back and forth with engine off
it will pump it out fine......just leave the return line off, shoot in a catch can

these hoses decay from inside out.......slowly shedding and destroying the pump
the containments act as cutting fluid.....I'd replace em at the 100K mark
along with the tranny cooler hoses

Are you replacing the high pressure lines or just that return line? The pic you posted looks to be the low pressure line. High pressure line is a different process. But I've never had one fail or even leak.

Also are you doing a full fluid change or just trying to get the air out of the line you just replaced.

    Just the low pressure side.

My plan was to top it off with fluid and remove the air to what I’ve added following the steps y’all provided. My plan was over the next few drives to exchange what’s in the reservoir to get nice clean fluid to get rid of the 26 yr old fluid.

Look into Old School auto part stores
They usually have sign in window that says “we make hydraulic hose”
    $30-$50
They just need the aluminum ends of said hose
    Works every time
    Takes 1day

Y’all provided some great ideas. Thank you. I was able to get all the runner lines on. I didn’t add more fluid yet to make sure one of y’all directed me on what needs to happen to bleed the air on the low side? I attached pics of my progress.
