My 06 Tacoma Quad Cab Pre-Runner V6 Brake Master Cylinder appears to have crapped out. (170,000 miles) How much should I anticipate to pay to have it rebuilt?

    I’d go with replaced?

@Bishop84 do you guys rebuild them?
Or replace them with a rebuilt unit?

OP, I’ll check my labor guide and give you hours.
But do understand, not all shops use the same labor guide.

Don't really rebuild master cylinders anymore, you either get a new or remanufactured one. As long as you have the standard master cylinder and vacuum brake booster and not the hydraulic booster I wouldn't think it would be too much to replace.

    "wouldn't be too much" is relative....$1,000? $2,000?

Hydraulic MC - Remove and Replace is 3.0 hours
    Vacuum MC - 1.6 hours

    Remove, rebuild and replace
    3.6 hours for either system

    Again, this means nothing really.

Standard master cylinder is around $100 aftermarket on rock auto, the hydraulic boosted one can be well over $1000.

I believe those are only on the TRD off-road to control the DAC/ATRAC, everything else would have a vacuum booster.

Some of the early build trucks (05-08) that had VSC had the hydraulic booster but they aren't very common.

I wouldnt even rebuild my own, its kind of a dead art.

Not a typical DIY item, simply because you have to do a very specific adjustment of booster to master that uses a special tool, or a specific wrench.

Not sure what Toyota sells anymore, we havent sold many masters except for the 2017 model campaign.

Refill brake fluid reservoir, pump the brakes, watch it empty of fluid. Weird noise-vibration in the brake pedal.

Where is the fluid ending up? The vibration in the brake pedal could be the ABS kicking in.

The fluid has to go somewhere. Pull all 4 wheels and rear drums. Make sure none are wet.

In your experiences, how do the non-OEM brake master cylinders compare to a factory toyota unit?

Reason I ask is because I purchased the SOS Performance Tundra/Sequoia master cyl upgrade for my tacoma. Included is a new (non oem) master cylinder....looks like an AC Delco or Centric unit.

I've been holding off on installing this upgrade because I've been thinking about using a geniune toyota sequoia master cylinder versus the Delco/Centric one because I dont know the rep that they have when it comes to hydraulic brake components.

If you guys think I'm overthinking it and the non OEM one are good enough...please share your advice. Why I havent purchased a new toyota cylinder is due to cost. Thanks
