I was talking with another member about what all is needed for the 4x4 conversion and figured I might as well post this list here. You can also use this links for a budget manual locking hubs conversion.

If using 3rd Gen 4Runner (1996-2002) J-Shift transfer case you will need to purchase the following for a Toyota Tacoma as the 4Runner's speed is determined by the ABS system:

I hope this helps anyone looking to do the swap - it's honestly not that difficult once you find the parts. If it'd be helpful I can do a complete step by step writeup if anyone needs it as well as post all of my notes from my research.

@ yotadude520 really appreciate the list. I wanta do the same soon. I was wondering where I could get a list. This helps me alot. Prerunner to 4x4 conversion. I was holding back because I have an auto trans and I was hoping to come across a manual.

Glad it helped! This list is a little different for a manual swap - would need the ECU, clutch master, all hydraulic lines, clutch kit and donor tranny!

Didn't know that. It's been a couple of years since I was looking into the conversion and I recall this basically being one of those unicorn finds. Thx for updating, I checked and ordered one online from a local dealer for $55.56

    To recap part#s,

5880204080E0 is for an Oak interior

    5880204080B0 is for a Charcoal/Dark Grey interior

EDIT: Now that I am looking at it closer, there are different descriptions for the Grey part#. Some say Dark Blue Grey and some say Charcoal/Dark Grey. Oh well, I'll update once I recieve it.

Check around on eBay and car-part.com they're definitely around! They are worth a pretty penny though.

    J shift t case into 98 taco
Hi all! New member to the group. Happy to be here.
I took a J shift tcase from a 2000 4Runner and swapped it into my 98 Tacoma. The 4Runner case had a cap where the speedo would go. I removed the cap and installed my speedo, the one from my original tcase. I have no speedometer on my dash and my check engine is on with the PO500. I took the speed sensor out, spun it by hand and it showed MPH. I am confused as to why this is happening. The gear “worm gear”? is on the speed sensor. I even swapped the sensor out with another for shits and giggles, but nothing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you all.

Also sorry if I posted this in the wrong spot, should I have started a new one?

I'd buy the speedometer gear that I bought for my swap and see if that works. You're the second person I've heard had this problem so I'm thinking the lengths of the shafts are different.

    • Speedometer gear shaft, clip & gear - Part #3340339365

Please let me know if this works, I'm going to check with the other member that messaged me on this as well.

For the speed sensor, I hope you have figured it out but it seems like another forum has talked about it a ton. Just came from there.

Regarding the list above, this is incredibly helpful. I’m just super confused on the
“Front Diff Manual Hub Tube (Yota Yard in Denver)” part. What is this? I can’t seem to find it anywhere and the YouTube tutorial I watched really didn’t dive into any of this unfortunately. For him he just locked the differential into 4wd permanently with a hose clamp so it can’t slide out since he had manual hubs so all he does is throw it into 4H inside, and flip the hubs outside. Is this the same thing as what this piece you mentioned does? Thanks.

Great info here, I'm embarking on the same and was hoping you could help answer some questions about the t-case. Assuming a j-shift t case for an A340F, what was the process for dealing with the existing sensors on the t-case? From what I've researched, there will be at least a neutral sensor, but also likely 4-lo and 4WD sensors as well. How are these used with the existing wiring from the A340E? I'm not even sure if they are necessary to use. It seems like most of the trans housing sensors are plug and play, but just curious how you managed the t-case stuff. Diagram from another thread for reference below!

    See my thread here -
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...dicator-light-and-a-t-p-neutral-light.783875/

Even if you aren’t doing the A/T P indicator, the rest will still apply.

You can actually skip it altogether but if you want the 4WD indicator to light up when in 2LO/4LO you’ll need to wire it in. Totally up to you.

Amazing stuff, thank you! Just picked up my j shift case from a 98 4Runner today, going to order new sensors for it since the ones on there were pretty beat up. Also going to ask you a question over in your VSS thread now lol

Hey guys, so I'm going with a friend to pick up some parts for his 3rd gen 4Runner from another (donor) 3rd gen 4Runner. My brother has a 2002 automatic prerunner that we've talked about 4WD swapping eventually so I figured while I'm there, I should grab any parts off of the 4Runner that would be useful for this tacoma 4WD swap.
So far, my understanding is that I need the following:
    • CV axles
    • Front diff
    • Front diff hardware
    • Front diff brackets
    • Transfer case (the 4Runner is a '96 so I know it has a J-shift)
    • Front driveshaft
    • Rear driveshaft
But here's what I'm confused about:
    1. I think I've gathered that he either needs a transmission from a 4WD or we would need to swap the output shaft. I've never disassembled any part of a transmission so I don't know what is involved in replacing the output shaft or where I would even find the correct one if I did. So assuming we're just going to swap the entire transmission, I'm wondering if I can use the automatic transmission from the 4WD 4Runner or if it has to be from a 4WD tacoma.
    2. If we do need to swap the transmission, do we also need the transmission mount from the 4WD or is it the same as the one from the prerunner?
    3. What is a "front diff manual hub tube"?

There's also a spacer ring you need for the front hubs (included in 'hardware', but was not obvious when I did mine - ended up causing damage to my calipers and the wheels could have fallen off). The hardest things overall are making sure you have all the hardware, getting the wheel bearings pressed, and getting the front diff in.

    1. Chances are you're getting a tranny for the output shaft, and assuming it's not fried, you might as well just install the whole thing. 4R will work, but the gear position selector may be different, but they are swappable, so keep your old one until it's done.
    2. You will need the 4WD mount. Cheap on Rock Auto.
    3. Can't answer that

#3 - diff tube refers to the passenger side of the clamshell. There is a “tube” that is bolted to the clamshell and extends out and the CV attaches to the tube. There are three tube variations, 1) ADD (Automatic Differential Disconnect) vacuum found on 95.5-00, 2) ADD electric found on 01-04, and 3) manual for the locking hub found on 95.5-00. More likely you will be looking for the manual tube and setting it up with manual hubs. With the tube configuration in mind, CVs are different between ADD and manual, meaning they’re not interchangeable between ADD and manual.

    See picture, thanks to @BartMaster1234

Top right is manual tube and bottom right is ADD tube.
