Kayak hauling--Thule bed rack or cheaper options?

We will be traveling this summer with a small camper, bikes and 2 12-foot kayaks. I have Yakima carriers (universal fit) I previously used on the roof on my CRV but would like to go the bed rack option with the Tacoma. The kayaks weigh about 50 lbs each btw--no problems using OEM roof racks with previous vehicles.

The Thule racks look awesome--saw a TON of them in Hawaii last week--but pricey ($1000 or so).

I have my eye on this TracRac system--the price seems reasonable, looks like a quality product.

Another option is to make my own with wood and plumbing pipe.

Anybody have experience with these racks for kayaks and such?

 

I made one with all 1x3's I had laying around. It worked pretty good for years. Cheapest option would be to just throw them in the bed, I did that quite a bit.

 

I put the Rola ladder rack on my Access Cab and works very well for lumber and kayaks. A bit of a pain to install but worth the effort.

 

Is this a genuine Thule rack? This same rack on Thule's website is nearly $140 more expensive. I'm also looking for a Kayak rack and am curious to know if you end up going with this.

 

I'd say a hitch mounted bed extender but that wouldn't work with the trailer and bikes. A sports rack like you mention might be the best to get them up high for trailer clearance and room for bikes.

 

I'm going to do something like this eventually but with the bars wider and quickly removable. I haul dirt bikes, kayaks and mtn bikes on a tailgate pad. This gives options to haul different combinations of those.
