Awesome safe very hard to break into!
I got this a year or so ago. Absolutely love this safe for surfing. Have used it countless times. I recently got rear ended right on the hitch by a lower sedan and the safe got pushed into the hitch and broke on me. I was unable to use the open the safe and now had to break into it. Started with a hammer and flat head to pry it out, didn’t work. Moved to angle grinder that did the trick with some work and then prying it out. Still took about 10 min. Well built item. If the maker is listening, Please send me a new one :)

I hesitated to buy this because of the cost, but it has been a great product and well worth the money. The lock has worked flawlessly for the last 15 months. It's easy to take out and put back in when you need the hitch for towing. We've driven a ton off road on washboard roads and the cover stays put and keeps dust out of the lock. The only issue we've had is some of the rubber coming off the cover and the metal rusting under it. (see pic) I'll be super bummed to pay another $20 for a new cover when it finally fails.

Some notes:
(1) This is not waterproof. Don't put a key that has batteries in the HitchSafe. I've never had puddles of water in the compartment, so it doesn't leak like sieve, but moisture and some water drops will get in.
(2) The rubber/plastic cover will get ripped off when you drive through a car wash. I take mine off before entering.
(3) My 10+ year-old safe worked fine and I never oiled the combo dials. They got a little gritty after a while. I probably could have sprayed a little WD40 on it to make the dials easier to turn, but it still worked fine.
(4) On some vehicles, it will stick out from the back of the car. This has to do with how far back the holes in the receiver are drilled. I'd like it better if mine went all the way in, but I can't drill new holes in the receiver, so I just deal with it.

Took modification to fit 2016 Toyota 4Runner

I have used a HitchSafe for over 10 years on my previous 2 vehicles (2002 4Runner, 2008 4Runner). I recently bought a 2016 4Runner and my old HitchSafe wouldn't fit in the receiver. The receiver is too rounded on the edges for the "square-ness" of the HitchSafe. The old one wouldn't fit, I thought maybe the design had changed a bit over the years, and I wanted a new, shiny one anyway, so I bought a new one. It didn't fit either. I spent about 5 minutes grinding all 4 edges of the HitchSafe with a Dremmel tool and grinding wheel #8193. Now it fits perfectly! Looking forward to another 10+ years of use. I leave my spare key in it all the time in case I lock myself out. I use the safe about 3 times each week. I put my key in it when I go for a run or bike ride.Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2016

I’m currently driving around the world and put my truck through the ringer as far as roads go. Unfortunately somewhere on a corrugated road in southern Argentina the rubber cover shook off, the draw slid out, and along with my spare key was lost forever.
