Well I'm three weeks in with my new 2023 TRD OR. So far I have to be honest, im not all that thrilled with the truck. Today a was out picking up dinner. On the way back I started cursing down a slight hill going about 50 mph and noticed a humming, almost whistling sound coming from the rear of my truck. It wasn't making the noise earlier in the day. It sure sounds like the dreaded rear differential hum some of these trucks have?

I'm just now getting used to the odd break feel, but that I definitely can live with. However this hum is incredibly annoying. Is there any fix? I hope this is not something I'll simply live with, I'll sell the thing if that's the case.

Any and all thoughts and opinions welcome.

    Andre.

I would just listen to a podcast or buy a subscription to sirius xm and turn up the music.

Many have the diff hum. I personally don’t mind it. I’m assuming you have stock tires still? Not much that I am aware of to mitigate the diff noise other than bumping up the volume of your tunes.

however you mention when decelerating, while my diff only hums at approx 45-50mph when accelerating.
    welcome to TW!

Have you tried different curses to see if one eliminates the hum? :anonymous:

Lol cruising! just noticed it today, well yesterday evening. It was silent until then. My 2010 never made this sound.

    Yes stock everything.

It's was definitely more noticeable when decelerating or coasting, less when accelerating. There was no vibration or any other noticeable effects. The truck has 300 miles on it. Pretty disappointing if this is the norm for these trucks. I did a lot digging before buying, but this didn't pop up.

I loved my 2010 but the frame was starting to rot out, so I had to trade it in. It was between another Taco or a Ridgeline, but I wanted a real truck lol. And the Taco looks so much better than the plain honda. The Honda was also more $$. I love my brother's F150, it has gobs of power, and crazy good fuel economy along with it, but it's just too flipping huge for my needs. So I settled on the Taco, if I decide I hate it at least I know I won't lose much if at all. Honestly I'm a bit disappointed so far, I've found lots of little QC issue as well, nothing huge, but still.

If this is normal I'm not keeping the truck long. This is not acceptable for a $40,000 vehicle. My first car "74 Buick" didn't have any diff noise. Now everything else was noisy as hell, it was a tin can on wheels, but come on really?

You are already not happy and want to get rid of it, so do it. You will never be happy with it.

I may end up doing just that. I didn't want to sell my 2010, it had low miles. If it wasn't for the rust problem I would have driven the wheels off of it. The 4.0 and 5 speed was a good setup.

I seen that, some isolation mounts and sound deadening it looks like. It's more of a harmonics problems than mechanical form what I've been reading. Why Toyota wouldn't fix this for the get go is appalling to me. I'm getting a 90's GM feeling from this thing.

You might want to hold off trading until this UAW labor situation is resolved. Lack of domestic inventory is going to drive more people to imports, and things will start drying up everywhere, driving prices up (again).

It's very possible I could make a profit in a month or two. I could just drive my car for awhile until prices stabilize.

300 miles and it’s already a piece of shit in your opinion. You haven’t even given it enough time to break in. The rear gears are not even fully meshed yet. Hell at 300 miles nothing is even close to being broken in. And the rear diff whine issue is all over the internet. I wish you would have been able to see that before you bought it.

As stated above, after commenting about it the way you did and being totally appalled at the truck, you will never like it so say goodbye to it, especially before one of the other well known issues pops up on you and has you feeling even worse.

Go find a vehicle that the money you spent on it makes you happy. Life is too short to buy something and then regret it.

Yes. It did not make that noise until yesterday, it was dead silent before.
