    Hi everyone,

Couldn’t find a thread about the plug on the oil filter housing and its purpose. One has to ask, what is the purpose of having that plug on the filter housing if it doesn’t drain oil and why?

    Thanx

I believe when you buy a replacement filter, it will come with a plastic valve (tube) that you stick in that spot to drain any remaining oil that is in the filter canister. This is done after you drained your oil but before you remove the filter. Was there a metal cap screwed into that spot?

The plastic tube in this pic is what I'm referring to.

It's a valve. You pull the little metal cap, and insert your hose bib (plastic piece that came with the filter OR you can buy a metal one from Bezos) to drain it.

It took me my first change to realize that too. I made a mess. I am not very smart. :anonymous:

Yep, I use both of these items. Makes oil changes much cleaner.

I don't remove to cap on mine. I just spin off the filter housing and change the element.

    Many!
The plastic filter drain piece is flaired at the end. This is designed to insert a piece of tubing into it so the oil will drain without making a mess. I had some tubing I attached and drained it right into the pan. I think it was 3/8 id but not certain. Don't mess around with it. Get it lined up and snap it in quickly.

Thank you everyone for demystifying the plug and @Bagman, yes I have the metal cap to screw into that spot.

When I opened up that little plug and drained the filter, I also found some nasty grimy gunk near the small o-ring.
Due to the way the filter works, all the gunk settles in the bottom of the filter and will never get sucked into the clean portion of the oil. I wouldn't worry about every oil change, but I think at some point maybe every 5 oil changes, it's a good idea to open that up and clean and wipe excess of that gunk so it doesn't accumulate too much.
